Job Description

This Optical Scientist role will be a part of an advanced optical film development team. This role will interface with film, displays, optics and metrology engineers for scaling advanced liquid crystal films enabling new architectures for AR/VR optics and displays.

Optical Scientist Responsibilities

* Collaborate with cross-functional teams across multiple disciplines such as Optics, Displays, Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing.

* Lead design, design validation and strategy development for future optical films and coatings for AR/VR.

* Model design tolerances to guide engineering development.

* Coordinate with external vendors to build and test prototypes.

* Root cause analysis of optical defects using optical simulation methods and reproducing defects experimentally.

* Explore new liquid crystal optical film concepts.

* Build academic and industry relationships to support research initiatives.

* Mentor and develop projects for graduate-level research interns.

* Travel internationally up to 25% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications

* PhD in the field of physics, materials or other optics-related fields with at least 3 years of relevant academic or industry experience.

* Experience translating complex ideas into digestible messages.

* Fundamental knowledge of polarization and diffraction optics. How to use and manipulate polarized light in transmission and reflection.

* Understanding of different methods of how polarizing and diffraction elements are made.

* Experience and knowledge in building optical models in one or more of these tools: RCWA modeling, sequential and non sequential (LightTools, Zemax) ray tracing, and LCD master.

* Laboratory experience designing optical experiments and optical metrology.

Preferred Qualifications

* 2+ years industry experience in optical design or optical technology development with liquid crystal films.

* Experience in shipping products for optical coatings and films.

* Understanding of liquid crystal films and liquid crystal modeling.

* Understanding of AR/VR lens optics and display optics (LCD and OLED).

* Experience leading in conferences, grants, fellowships, patents or other professional societies.

* Peer-reviewed publications experience.
