Dow is offering an exciting opportunity for a Senior R&D/TS&D Technologist in the Dow Plastics Additives business located in Collegeville, PA.
The individual will provide technical support to lead scientists in the preparation and execution of experimental activities and studies. It is expected that this role would include working with project leaders in both research and development (R&D) and technical service and development (TS&D) to drive projects from concept shaping to commercialization. The role will be up to 100% lab focused and offer opportunity for growth and development. Preferred candidates will have broad hands-on technical experience with thermoplastic and thermoset resins (PVC, PC, PBT, ABS, PMMA, Epoxy, etc.). In addition, the preferred candidate is expected to have excellent data analysis and documentation experience together with good interpersonal and organizational skills.
Primary Responsibilities:
Works as part of a team in a laboratory supporting chemists and engineers in developing, screening and commercializing new products and process.
Manages and then safely executes laboratory work requests, maintaining and running relevant laboratory apparatus and testing equipment and documenting data.
Working safely in an R&D environment, actively participating in company safety programs.
Achieves project goals using technical, role-specific skills and experience, and introduces new procedures for new instrument methods, equipment changes, or new equipment.
Acts responsible for calibration, safe operation and routine maintenance of simple and complex instruments, machinery, and system components, including production equipment.
Updates personal knowledge for proper use of equipment via manuals and job aids, logs maintenance activities and calibration results as required.
Communicates scientific observations to project team or principle investigator and organizes and prepares data tables and charts for inclusion in supported studies.
Compounding and testing thermoplastics (PC, PBT, ABS, PMMA, etc.) by techniques and capabilities common to the industry (including dry blend equipment, 2-roll mill, extrusion, injection molding, compression press)
Measuring rheological properties of formulations in the melt state (brabender torque and fusion (PVC), capillary rheometry, melt flow index, etc.)
Creating test specimen using 2-roll mill, pressing plaques, injection molding, CNC milling, sawing, notch cutting, etc.
Measuring material properties of plastic articles (gloss, color, impact strength (IZOD, Charpy), tensile properties, flexural, HDT, Vicat, QUV/Xenon arc, foam rod expansion, foam density, etc.)
Formulating, curing and testing liquid resins important to the composite adhesives markets. This will include developing workflows and testing procedures.
Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues when encountered to accelerate repair.
Leading the tracking of preventative maintenance items to support planning and budget for critical departmental unit operations
Leading management of change (MOC) protocols for new processes or procedures introduced to the group
Work well both independently and on project teams
Documenting work and communicating results in a timely fashion in data books and internal reports.

Required Qualifications:
A minimum of one year of work experience with material processing and/or testing is required.
A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in plastics compounding or composites is preferred.
Good computers skills with Microsoft Excel and Outlook is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Must be willing and able to do the following with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Education:
A minimum of an associate degree Or 4+ military experience equivalent is required.
A degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or other science related is preferred.
