DESCRIPTION

Do you enjoy solving real world customer issues and complex technical problems at a large scale using a wide range of technologies? Are you interested in building storage systems that provide fault tolerant, high performance, low cost durable storage in the cloud? Together, we will be starting on a journey within the Block & Object storage organization to build a new AWS service that will provide AWS customers the next level of storage experience. If the idea of building large scale systems that enable Petabyte scale excites you then this is the right opportunity for you.

As an engineer, you will get the opportunity to architect large-scale distributed systems, improve availability and performance, and innovate to increase hardware resource utilization to improve costs for our customers. You will have an opportunity to develop file systems, kernel mode drivers, user space processes and firmware running on PCI based offload cards. There will be multiple opportunities to work at different levels in the storage and networking stack while pushing on the latest innovations to set industry standards. The ideal candidate would possess analytical, design, problem solving skills and experience in building & operating large scale systems. You will work closely with a tight, agile team that ships often, iterates quickly and takes pride in the product they deliver.

On-call responsibilities
In AWS, if you build it, you own it. AWS services owned by the block and storage organization are highly available 24X7 worldwide requiring dedicated support from our engineering teams. We pride ourselves on a high level of ownership in the work we do. This means we hold a high bar for test automation, verification processes, design and code reviews to ensure that our systems meet the exacting standards our customers demand. We maintain a regular on-call rotation across our teams with engineers and managers all taking part to resolve the inevitable issues that arise. We work hard to minimize getting paged in the middle of the night as we recognize that a well-rested employee is a productive employee.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

4+ years of professional software development experience
3+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C including object-oriented design
2+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A background in one or more of the following may be helpful with on-boarding and ramp-up for this position:
Multithreaded concurrent processing
Linux/Windows kernel modules and file systems, storage hardware or virtualization technologies
Embedded systems, Device Drivers, Firmware
Networking and/or Storage Domain experience
Enterprise-scale distributed systems
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team
Experience leading a team of software engineers.
