Times Opinion is looking for an experienced, creative editor to lead and champion the department's special projects.

We are looking for a news-focused editor, but one who can see through the clutter to find what's truly interesting. You can think big for enterprise pieces, the kind of reported commentary that inspires the conversation and can stretch across multiple formats to find new ways to get the point across with text, visuals and audio. You have close and extensive ties to writers, and know what's happening before everyone else does.

We are looking for someone with sound editorial judgment and management skills, who can, directly and indirectly, guide a team of editors and contributing writers to produce path-breaking work. You know the difference between provocation and a good argument; and can handle tricky situations with diplomacy and finesse. You are committed to representing different points of view and to mentoring and developing staff members. As part of the editorial leadership of Times Opinion, you would help shape our overall strategy and find new ways to deepen our engagement with Times readers and find new audiences for our work.

Responsibilities Include:

* Conceiving, commissioning and editing each week's marquee Opinion journalism. These will often occupy the cover of the Sunday Review, but not exclusively. The priority is building distinct digital experiences.

* Anticipating and reacting to the news with smart, forward thinking assigning to staff and outside writers

* Developing a wide variety of voices about the biggest news and ideas

* Expertly managing the production of ambitious packages that requires coordinating workflow across copy editing, fact checking and contributions from design, graphics, photo, video and audience teams

* Coordinating with the audience editors to maximize the reach and influence of the work

* Maintaining a long-term schedule of enterprise projects

* Convening a regular meeting and process to solicit pitches from inside and outside the department, including from vertical editors, staff writers, columnists, and regular contributors

* Managing editors and writers, as their coach and advocate, which includes annual performance reviews, managing schedules and long-term goals, recruiting new talent and managing the career development of existing staff

Requirements:

* At least 5 years of experience managing journalists in a digital or daily publication

* At least 5 years of experience working with and editing staff or contributing writers

The New York Times (sometimes abbreviated as the NYT and NYTimes) is an American newspaper based in New York City with worldwide influence and readership. Founded in 1851, the paper has won 127 Pulitzer Prizes, more than any other newspaper. The Times is ranked 17th in the world by circulation and 2nd in the U.S.

The paper is owned by The New York Times Company, which is publicly traded and is controlled by the Sulzberger family through a dual-class share structure. It has been owned by the family since 1896; A.G. Sulzberger, the paper's publisher, and his father, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., the company's chairman, are the fourth and fifth generation of the family to head the paper.

Nicknamed "The Gray Lady", the Times has long been regarded within the industry as a national "newspaper of record". The paper's motto, "All the News That's Fit to Print", appears in the upper left-hand corner of the front page.

Since the mid-1970s, The New York Times has greatly expanded its layout and organization, adding special weekly sections on various topics supplementing the regular news, editorials, sports, and features. Since 2008, the Times has been organized into the following sections: News, Editorials/Opinions-Columns/Op-Ed, New York (metropolitan), Business, Sports of The Times, Arts, Science, Styles, Home, Travel, and other features. On Sunday, the Times is supplemented by the Sunday Review (formerly the Week in Review), The New York Times Book Review, The New York Times Magazine  and T: The New York Times Style Magazine. The Times stayed with the broadsheet full-page set-up and an eight-column format for several years after most papers switched to six, and was one of the last newspapers to adopt color photography, especially on the front page.
