AWCS is the in-house warehouse management system for Sherwin-Williams domestic distribution centers. It consists of an Oracle RDBMS running on Linux, with business logic written in PL/SQL, and two primary user interfaces, one for the office staff written in PowerBuilder, and one for the warehouse techs written in HTML/CSS/Javascript. AWCS Development staff are expected to continuously improve the AWCS system and its ability to efficiently manage our warehouse and meet our customers requirements, while ensuring at all times that we keep the system operational.
Essential Functions
Strategy & Planning
* Work with management to generate quarterly work plans.
* Participate in recommendation of improvements to existing technical processes.
* Research tools and technologies and identify those that can best help serve the needs of clients.
* Research and implement related tools to improve development process.
Development & Deployment
* Accept major service requests received from the user community and assigned by management.
* Gather requirements from the user community, fellow developers and system documentation.
* Review design with users, development staff, support staff, and management for adherence to all requirements and completeness in solving the user problems at hand, as well as supportability, maintainability, user understandability, and utility.
* Implement design using Oracle database, PL/SQL business logic, and PowerBuilder and/or Web-based user interfaces as necessary.
* Create and maintain system and user documentation.
* Test your enhancements and the system with the help of other developers and users.
* Submit and conduct peer reviews of designs and implemented solutions.
* Submit proper requests and documentation for software release.
* Provide user support for new software implementations, at times travelling to user facilities as required.
Operational Management
* Learn, demonstrate, and assist junior team members with proper development process.
* Maintain and exhibit basic mastery of Oracle and PL/SQL features and development, and mentor junior developers in proper development techniques using these technologies.
* Learn and maintain basic understanding of all major components of the AWCS system, how they are used, and how they operate.
* Accurately maintain software repository (currently SVN) along with the rest of the staff.
* Complete Continuous Improvement projects as needed.
* Accurately report hours spent on project in a timely fashion.
* Regularly participate in design reviews and testing.
* Assist with occasional daytime support as needed, assisting users and resolving issues.
* Update system and user documentation whenever required.
* Work with existing systems to track and manage requests and issues.
* Provide business reports to management and clients.
* Regularly assist with system and database administration.
* Regularly assist fellow developers in problem resolution, support, and development.
* Stay appraised of relevant software and technology trends, making recommendations to the team.
* Safeguard continuous system availability
* Respond immediately to reports of system error, outage, or instability
* Ensure all software releases fail safe and maintain data integrity and ability of users to continue mission-critical functions
* Release tested software into live, running systems, generally in 20-minute downtime windows.
* Support efforts to update and upgrade systems as necessary to maintain integrity.
Incidental Functions
* Assist with projects as may be required to contribute to efficiency and effectiveness of the work.
* Participate in after-hours 24/7 on call rotation support.
* Keep track of time spent on projects in an accurate and timely fashion.
* Assist with the effort estimation for new projects.
* Accurately maintain software repository (currently SVN).
* Travel 5-10% (domestic and/or international).
* Work outside the standard office 7.5 hour work day may be required.
Position Requirements
Formal Education & Certification
* Bachelors degree in related field or equivalent experience.
Knowledge & Experience
* 5+ year IT experience
* 5 years hands-on programming with Oracle PL/SQL or direct experience with AWCS use and reporting.
* Basic SQL and Relational Database knowledge, Oracle preferred.
* Basic software design and programming concepts.
* Some exposure to web development.
* Knowledge of basic requirements gathering and project management.
* Some experience supporting mission-critical systems.
Preferred Experience
* Oracle Application Express
* Web software development (JavaScript/jQuery/AJAX/CSS/HTML)
* Linux/UNIX administration and shell scripting
* PowerBuilder development
* Business exposure to warehousing and distribution.
