Position Summary
Provide advanced applied chemistry for business-critical areas of wine chemistry such the effects of smoke exposure on grapes and wines. Develop analytical methodologies for relevant wine components and continuously improve these through research and technology. Contribute to sensory science through a better understanding of sensory through chemistry.
Responsibilities
* Conduct literature searches to stay current on relevant product quality related issues such as smoke exposure that can negatively consumer preferences
* Cultivate relationships with customers, academics, and institutions
* Develop/improve analytical methods to test for compounds of interest related to wine quality, with an emphasis on smoke exposure
* Monitor advances in technology and apply these to improve analytical methodology
* Plan and conduct experiments to understand the effects that relevant compounds have on sensory across the product lifecycle
* Collaborate with the Sensory department to further our competency to objectively define product sensory characteristics through chemistry
* Assist the Sensory team with research into the chemistries of sensory.
* Write/approve procedures (SOPs) for new analytical methods and assure lab proficiency among laboratories and analysts.
* Effectively communicate relevant results, data, and conclusions with stakeholders
* Oversee the systems and programming that assure the integrity of research laboratory results to include analyst proficiency and laboratory certification/accreditation where appropriate
* Serve as a technical resource for chemistry requirements of the Company
* Special projects and other responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
* Bachelors degree in science-related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
* At least 4 years laboratory experience
* Knowledge of analytical procedures and equipment including use of Gas Chromatograph (GC), Liquid Chromatograph (LC) and the Mass Spectrometer.
* Chemistry or Biology background
* Strong attention to detail
* Ability to follow verbal and written instructions/directions
* Ability to prioritize and multi-task
* Must be able to recognize potential problems that require solutions to be found at a higher level
* Basic writing and mathematical skills
* Basic skill level in using computer applications (Excel, Work, Outlook)
* Strong interpersonal skills
* Strong communication skills
* Ability to follow verbal and written instructions/directions
* Able to work a flexible schedule with overtime as requested, including weekends and off shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
* Understanding of microbiological analyses
* Familiarity with JDE/SAP, Access, Intelex and Intellepac
* Familiarity with AS400, JDE/SAP, Access, Intelex and Intellepac
* Knowledge of various wine types
* Previous winery experience

Work Environment:
* The lab presents a unique environment that requires performing tasks of a repetitious nature, the ability to change job priorities and the need for speed, accuracy and precision to ensure the highest quality standards.
* Works outdoors/indoors.
* Works in warm/cold climates.
* Works in high places.
* Works on wet surfaces.
* Is exposed to loud noise, fumes and/or toxic chemicals.
* Works near moving, mechanical parts and lift truck traffic.
* Must be able to move up to 55lbs.
* Primary office environment may be warehouse/distribution setting.
* Must be at least 21 years of age.
* Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time and work on a computer for extended periods. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
