Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

The scope of this position is to contribute to the maximal operating efficiency of a cutting edge micro/nano-fabrication laboratory. This requires the ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, upgrade, and modify state-of-the-art equipment to support the entire portfolio of projects undertaken by Thin Films Research to support multiple Corning business divisions. The position requires the successful candidate to proficiently operate in the mechanical, electrical, and chemical domains in a cleanliness-controlled environment.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Helps to build equipment and process engineering infrastructure in world class research lab

Works individually, and with the technical staff or vendor reps to drive repair and improvement in equipment/process performance

Helps drive and implement improvements to continually enhance equipment and processes

Can be called upon to consult or engage in problem solving activities. Interface with managers, vendors and consultants.

Executes equipment upgrades, installations, and modifications

Collects and analyzes data from a wide variety of sources, and in consultation with scientists and engineers, implements action plans to resolve long term and/or reoccurring equipment failures based on equipment historical data.

Tracks equipment / process performance over time via appropriate documents and charts.

Establishes equipment configurations based on input from Engineers, Scientists, Management

Implements equipment repair and preventive maintenance procedures.

Travel requirements (please note if international):

< 10%, no international travel anticipated

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

40 hours per week. Some flexibility exists outside core work hours of 8 AM to 4 PM, but within standard 6 AM to 6PM working hours.

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

B.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering technology, Physics, or closely related field, or an A.S. in a technical discipline with at least 2 years experience.

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):

Ability to modify equipment to provide new or enhanced capability.

Experience in developing control hardware and/or software for process equipment.

Demonstrated ability in solving complex equipment / process problems.

Experience working in a project environment

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

Experience interfacing with vendors, facilities engineering, and environmental, health, and safety groups during project planning and execution.

Familiarity with cleanroom processes and protocols.

Experience sustaining and developing processes on vacuum/plasma equipment, including hands-on troubleshooting of both physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition processing tools, including expertise in vacuum and plasma diagnostics.

Photolithography equipment and processes

Wet chemical and dry etching equipment and processes

Experience in generating SPC data and tracking.

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):

Ability to develop and communicate project plans, schedules, and resource requirements to complete maintenance, repair, and upgrade activities on process equipment.

Ability to work well with a wide range of personalities in a dynamic, research-based environment.
