Etsy is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the growing Experimentation Platform and Sciences (XPS) team, building the next-generation platforms and tools to accelerate offline and online experimentation for machine-learning and product teams across Etsy. It is part of Etsy's central data organization and the role reports to the Chief Data Officer. To learn more about Machine Learning and Applied Science at Etsy, check out https://dsml.etsy.com.

This is a full-time role located in San Francisco, CA or Brooklyn, NY. You will be responsible for managing multiple distributed teams across the North America region.

In this role, you will lead an organization composed of multiple teams of scientists and engineers and manage the managers of those teams. You will drive the vision and roadmap of all Etsys experimentation platform, A/B test, and offline evaluation (a Kaggle-like experience). We are looking for a senior leader who has the passion & experience to lead Etsy in building an industry-leading experimentation platforms.

The ideal candidate is a creative, proven leader with excellent technical, problem-solving, and communication skills. They are expected to have experience working with cross-functional teams and managing multiple partners, with the ability to influence leaders in other organizations and prioritize between different impactful projects & outcomes. They are expected to work with science and product leaders to accurately translate business requirements into solutions, and be responsible for the successful execution of building and operating scalable systems and solutions. We are seeking an engineering/science leader with a deep technical understanding of internet experiments (A/B tests) and with an engineering background.

About the Role

* Manage and coach managers of the experimentation platform and experimentation sciences teams, which include engineers and applied researchers.

* Lead the vision of the XPS organization, drive the technical strategy, and be responsible for its technical roadmap that meets product needs.

* Collaborate with stakeholders across Etsy to make prioritization decisions that balance business need with platform objectives.

* Advise leadership and executives, evangelizing across the company the need for a modern experimentation platform and data science innovations that push the boundaries of what machine-learning and product teams can measure and learn.

* Lead your team to build solutions that accelerate product development at Etsy through easy, fast, and trustworthy experiments for all teams.

* Attract and hire recruiting managers and engineers.

About You

* You have at least 2 years experience in leading and coaching managers and at least 5 years of engineering management experience in large organizations.

* You have led and grew a company-wide experimentation platform with multiple stakeholders. You have experience in bandit optimization, adaptive experimentation, bayesian, empirical Bayes, or large-scale inference methods.

* You have knowledge of observational causal inference (e.g., regression adjustment, matching, propensity score stratification), or quasi-experimental methods (e.g., instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, interrupted time series).

* You have experience communicating with non-engineers and executives about deeply technical products.

* You are an excellent coach, mentor, and developer of both managers and engineers.

Minimum requirements

* B.S. in Computer Science, Statistic or related field (MS or Ph.D is preferred).

* You have experience growing an engineering group to at least 25 people and attracting high-caliber managers and engineers.

* You have proven industrial experience in driving online experimentation (e.g. A/B testing) in a two-sided marketplace as well as offline experimentation for machine learning.

* Experience in managing remote teams is a plus; experience in managing both engineers and scientists is a strong plus.
