Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY: A person having extensive knowledge, experience, proficiency and/or certifications in comprehensive, technical surgical skills that provides technical leadership in the care of the perioperative patient. Under the supervision of the Department Director, provides supervision of the sterile processing staff and oversight responsibility for the timely, accurate, and safe processing of instrumentation. Assesses instrument sets for completion, too much/too little inventory, and adjusts content to meet needs. In addition, working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, attends to the patients direct care needs. Acts a primary preceptor for Surgical Technology Students, Surgical Technologists, and Central Sterile/Supply Techs in developing needed direct care skills and performs tasks as delegated by the Director/RN. When involved in patient care, works in partnership with a RN and although this individual does not assume an independent assignment, can be relied upon to demonstrate excellence in the direct care of the most complex perioperative patients. In addition, Supports an organizational culture for Service Excellence and practices the Service Excellence Standards to all customer groups.

KEY PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

III. PROVISION OF SERVICES

1. Responsible for sterile processing staff, equipment, and instrumentation for sterile processing. Is competent to function in the staff role and actively does so when needed.
2. Acts as a resource to sterile processing staff for job performance.
3. Acts as a resource to OR staff to meet patient needs.
4. Collaborates with Materials Management Resource Coordinator to obtain and maintain adequate instrument inventory.
5. Updates and maintains accurate instrument count sheets.
6. Assists the RN and other Surgical Technologists to provide an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors and employees.
7. SAFETY - Meets all regulations from AAMI, AORN, OSHA, CDC, and JC.
8. Maintains complete and accurate documentation of biological testing and sterilization parameters as required.
9. Assists the RN in all cases inclusive of the most complex patients with the implementation of an age appropriate plan of care through tasks delegated by the RN.
10. Demonstrates leadership in care delivery and tasks delegated by the RN based on patients' condition and that technically expert levels of individual skills are required.
11. Demonstrates both knowledge and technical expertise regarding procedures, sterile processing, equipment, supplies, instruments, and surgical sequence for all common surgical procedures. Is able to translate this to teaching others.
12. Demonstrates the ability to pass instruments and second scrub on all procedures applicable to ability.

IV. LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE

Utilizes the appropriate leadership skills in delegating and providing feedback concerning staff performance. Demonstrates initiative, a collaborative approach, and sound judgment in day to day management at the unit level.

V. OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

Manages the satisfaction of department outcomes to include patients, families, peers, employees, and physicians through effective communication and appropriate responsiveness to customer issues. Accountability for appropriate staffing for each shift, based on patient census, acuity, and available resources.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to read, write, and speak English.
2. Bending, lifting (25 lb. minimum), grasping, fine hand coordination, pushing, pulling, squatting.
3. Ability to repeatedly twist, squat, and stoop
4. Ability to communicate with patients, families, staff and physicians
5. Ability to remain calm under stress
6. Ability to comprehend and follow instructions
7. Ability to response to pages
8. Standing long periods of time.
9. Exposure to infectious organisms, agents, and toxic chemicals.
10. Ability to make decisions within the limitations of the job.
