Primary Responsibilities:

* Overseeing the delivery of legal services and related support to Optum
* Collaborating with colleagues across the UnitedHealth Group legal department
* Proactively identifying and resolving legal and related matters impacting Optum
* Assisting in the review, preparation and negotiation of various products, documents and contracts associated with Optum business
* Participating in and leading negotiations with key customers and vendors
* Developing best practices for addressing emerging legal and business risks
* Supporting Optum in the development and delivery of new products
* Working in partnership with the Compliance team
* Counseling senior management on strategic business initiatives
* Managing outside counsel
* Fostering key regulatory relationships

The successful candidate will possess strong verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment and business instincts. The ability to lead people and change is also critical. The ability to delegate work and operate in a matrixed environment will be important qualities for the successful candidate. Prior law firm and in-house experience are desired, as is prior experience managing a team of legal professionals.

Required Qualifications:

* Juris Doctorate degree
* 8+ years of work experience as a lawyer, prefer experience in health care law, insurance or benefits law
* Knowledge of state and federal health care, insurance, privacy and related laws
* You will be asked to perform this role in an office setting or other company location
* Employees are required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive VoiceResponse (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group approved symptom screener prior to entering the work site each day, in order to keep our work sites safe. Employees must comply with any state and local masking orders. In addition, when in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are expected to wear a mask in areas where physical distancing cannot be attained

Preferred Qualifications:

* Legal experience with administration of behavioral health benefits.
* Demonstrated understanding of regulatory requirement related to behavioral health benefits, including but not limited to mental health parity
