Packer Utility Operator

The Packing Utility Operator will effectively assist packaging and palletizer operator in the safe, efficient, and effective process of operating the packaging station. Operator is expected to provide assistance but not complete the task of the packaging operator. Operator is to assist by, but not limited to: Staging empty product bags, staging tag kits for upcoming runs, input of product yields into E1 operating systems, housekeeping of extended packaging areas, operating machine for both packer and palletizer operators to ensure production continues through breaks and lunches. Operator must be familiar with all production process for bagged product within the guidelines of Quality Management System (QMS).

Preferred Qualifications & Experiences:

* Mechanically inclined individual who can help troubleshoot their system.
* Must demonstrate knowledge of Repete System and operation of equipment.
* Must demonstrate knowledge of Opti-Pak and Opti-Seq
* Individual must understand and abide by all Purina Animal Nutrition Codes of Conduct, Safety, Quality, and Environmental programs.
* Person must be able to lift at least 60 pounds.
* Person must be able to proficiently operate a forklift truck in a safe manner.
* Purina requires all employees to work together to produce a quality product in a prompt and courteous manner.
* Practice good customer service procedures.
* Individual must accurately complete all documents for in-house use and federal regulations
* Person must be able to perform required duties sufficiently with minimal supervision, assist in troubleshooting, and work overtime when required.
* Must be able to perform simple math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
* Proficient in basic computer skills.
* Must possess the ability to work as a positive team member.
* Must be able to effectively communicate with the packing team
* Other duties assigned by Supervisor.
* Actively seek assignments when equipment is down for extended periods of time

Responsibilities:

* Procedures
* Packing Utility Operator shall provide support to the Packaging and Palletizer operator to ensure safe, quality, and efficient production. Operator must be proficient in E1 work order management procedures. Operator will gather and stage empty bags and tag kits for the packaging operator and assist in preparing the machine for the next product run. Operator will gather product yield counts from the palletizer and be expected to enter yield counts into the E1 system. They will be expected to close WOs if proper QMS specifications are met and place on hold if not. Operator will upkeep and organize empty bag storage, ensuring all products are stored in their proper place and new shipments are received and stored away in a timely manner.
* Follow QMS standards including, but not limited to sequencing, flushing, and clean-out. Ensure that all runs are manufactured in less than or equal to the targeted run time (see Production Expectations). Safely and efficiently operate equipment and help troubleshoot problems.

Expectations:

* Work Safely: All safety procedures are expected to be followed including, but not limited to: LOTO, PPE, Housekeeping.
* Quality Checks: Operators are expected to abide all QMS and Purina quality standards. Runs are to be inspected for: Appearance, Bag Weights, Liquid application, Sequencing, Retention Samples, ETC. All assigned quality documentation is to be filled out by the packaging operator and submitted daily to plant supervision.
* Packing Assistance: Operator is expected to assist the Packaging operator to ensure efficient production. Operator is expected to have all product packaging staged for any products awaiting packaging, stage product tags in designated area for packaging operator to have easy access to, assist in staging empty bags in the packaging machine for quick, efficient, and seamless changeovers.
* Housekeeping: Packaging Operators are expected to keep good housekeeping standards in the adjoining packaging area. Operators are required to keep the Empty bag warehouse, compactor, tag room, scale floor, and Mezzanine floor in clean order. Operator will assist/lead the cleaning of the packaging machine during cleaning periods, ensuring quick and effective cleaning is obtained. Operator will assist in the clearing of set-offs from the workstation and getting trash into the compactor
* E1 Operations: Packaging Operators are expected to use their own personal E1 Logins when operating the packaging stations. Package operators will be solely responsible for the input of Liquid application amounts from RSView into E1 work orders. Utility operators will be in charge of inputting yield counts and closing work orders as they meet QMS standards.
* Repete Operations: Packaging Operators are expected to use their own personal Repete Logins when operating the packaging station.
* Equipment Cleaning: Packaging Operator is in charge of communicating and orchestrating cleaning operations with the packaging team (Utility Operator & Palletizer Operator). Utility Operator is to complete Blender cleaning and then assist in remaining cleaning of machinery. Cleanings are to be done DAILY by each shift before the following shift arrives. Handoff of a running machine is EXPECTED.
* Packaging Utility Operators are first and foremost expected to complete all operations in a safe manner. Safety is top priority at all production stations. ALL safety procedures are expected to be followed. If you feel an operation is unsafe or safety measure are inadequate you are to stop and inform your supervisor.
* Utility operators are expected to assist the Packaging Operator in efficient production of all Purina Animal Nutrition products. They are expected to stage and assist in product changeovers and work order inputs. They are to assist, not take over packaging operations. Operators are to ensure the production line keeps running thru Packing and Palletizer operator lunches and breaks. Utility operators are expected to run the packaging line once the packaging operator shift has ended. Housekeeping is to be kept up at all times. The utility operator will be in charge of all areas adjacent to the immediate packaging area.
* Packer Operator will keep designated areas swept and clean at all times according to housekeeping rules and guidelines. Dispose of spilled product appropriately. All operators are expected to use appropriate housekeeping methods to keep their area clean.

PRODUCTION EXPECTATIONS

* Pack a minimum of 1100 Bags/Hr.
* Goal = 8000 Bags per shift
* 5 minute changeovers Packer 1 & 8 minute changeovers Packer 2
* Running handoff to succeeding shift

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Working in a manufacturing or warehouse environment, you will be walking, standing and engaging in movement throughout the day, and occasionally to frequently be required to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Due to a large variety of job duties (both routine and non-routine), certain duties also may involve, a variety of physical activities including bending, lifting, stooping, turning, twisting, pushing, pulling, raising arms above shoulders and head, standing, working in enclosed areas, climbing stairs or ladders, and operating heavy machinery. The noise level in the work environment can vary but noise is usually low to moderate.

At times, you may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety gloves, hearing protection, a respirator or dust mask, protective footwear and protective clothing or uniforms. Work may be performed in cold and/or hot temperatures and the environment can be dusty. Physical requirements further include the ability to engage in productive and collaborative communication with co-workers and work may need to be performed during non-standard hours, including nights and weekends. At times, the ability to work overtime also may be required. The ability to perform these requirements is necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
