Job Description:
L3Harris Space & Sensors Division designs and manufactures complex electro-optical and electro-mechanical systems for the defense, aerospace, and commercial markets. L3Harris is a recognized leader in Electro-Optical technologies that enable high energy laser missions, including Laser Beam Director Systems, SLS Focal Plane Arrays, and stabilized tracking systems. The exceptional quality, ruggedness, and reliability that have made our military instrumentation systems benchmarks for performance have also been incorporated in our precision, high energy, beam directing systems.
We are currently seeking a Lead, Controls Engineer with specialized engineering experience in pointing, tracking controls, stabilized platform control, and precision optical motion control systems for the Mason, Ohio Directed Energy products. This individual will have the opportunity to lead in development of cutting edge and world-class Electro-Optic & High Energy Laser Beam Director products, and manage large, complex project initiatives of strategic importance to the organization.
Essential Functions:
* Develop gimbal, fast steering mirror, and optical positioning controls performance requirements.
* Analyze relevant controls functional and system level requirements for performance.
* Develop servo control algorithms, using MATLAB and Simulink, and collaborate with software, firmware, and electrical engineers to facilitate the conversion of these algorithms into code useable by CPU, DSP, and FPGA hardware, as required. Assist with the test and integration of these algorithms on the servo control system. Responsible for the performance of the servo control system.
* Design inertial LOS stabilization algorithms, inertial and non-inertial slew analysis, and geo-location pointing analysis.
* Use controllers that run MATLAB and Simulink, such as Speedgoat and DSPACE, to develop and evaluate prototype control algorithms and servo control hardware.
* Develop and/or analyze control systems using MATLAB and Simulink. Perform trade studies. Create control systems architectures and generate control systems requirements. Generate control systems error budgets. Generate sufficiently detailed control system flow down requirements to insure the electrical, software, mechanical, and optical engineering designs will be compliant with the control system requirements.
* Perform closed loop inertial tracking control for airborne, ground, and maritime based two axis gimbal, where the gimbal is installed on a moving platform.
* Support integration and verification of CPU, DSP, and FPGA servo control software and firmware.
* Verify open loop and closed loop controls performance with analysis, demonstration, and testing of equipment.
* Actively work with peers and specialists on cross-functional teams to solve a wide range of difficult and unique issues to meet shared product milestones.
Qualifications:
* B.S. degree in engineering from accredited four-year college or university and a minimum of 9 years of applicable systems engineering with controls development experience.
* Experience with computer aided engineering tools for control engineering (MATLAB).
* Good interpersonal skills, ability to work well within and outside of the organization including customers, vendors, and leadership with minimal oversight.
* Must have the ability to obtain a US Secret Clearance.
Preferred Additional Skills/Experience:
* Defense application in pointing and tracking
* Guidance, navigation and control (GNC)
* Deep knowledge of INS and IMU devices and strapdown inertial navigation technology
* C programming
* Precision mechanism control
* Graduate degree in engineering
* Demonstrated proposal-writing capability
