Construction Inspector

Job Summary

The pipeline assets constructed by our internal and external crews are the assets that fuel our Companys success and provide millions of customers safe and reliable gas service. The Construction Inspector position for Southern Company Gas (Located in Newport News Virginia) is instrumental to ensuring our pipeline assets are constructed in a safe, quality, compliant, and efficient manner.

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities by Competency

Functional Expertise:

* Oversees construction of underground gas utility infrastructure for residential, commercial, and industrial properties to ensure they are installed per the design, company standards, policies, & procedures.

* Inspects Construction Activities (safety, compliance, quality, environmental, locates and restoration) to ensure quality & safety standards are met & documented.

* Reviews and submits work orders, progress reports, field changes, as-built records to ensure compliance and company standards and policies.

* Provides timely project updates & inspector reports to applicable stakeholders (i.e. Engineering, Construction Operations, Operations, Sales, Contractors).

* Responds to emergency situations in a specific region during after hours

* Will be assigned to specific projects

Business Acumen:

* Serves as technical lead for Company Specifications (OPM), Operator Qualifications (OQ) and Construction Quality Assurance/Control (CQA) and makes corrective actions as needed.

* Looks beyond day to day activities to any potential obstacles that need to be addressed and communicates accordingly

* Works with Construction Supervisor to ensure that all inspection is properly archived as part of the project closeout

Engagement:

* Influences external contractors who represent the company by shadowing corporate values.

* Provides daily feedback on contractors performance. Feedback is documented in the Companys compliance/inspection reporting system

Driving Results:

* Monitors work/project goals and objectives.

* Understands pipeline contracts. Holds contractor accountable to contract items.

* Enforce company policies & standards, permit requirements, and environmental requirements on construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations

Qualifications

Construction Inspector:

Education and Experience:

Required:

* High School Diploma or GED

* 3 years of experience in construction or utility operations

Preferred

* 5 years of experience in utility construction

* Vocational Degree or Certificate in a technical field, or

* Associates Degree in Construction or related field

Or

Equivalent academic education and experience

Skills:

Required:

* Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

* Intermediate proficiency with GIS or comparable system

* Construction Inspection

Preferred:

* Basic knowledge of Pipeline Inspection

* Basic knowledge of Welding/NDE

* Basic knowledge of Material Inspection

* Basic knowledge of Environmental Regulations

* Basic knowledge of CFR 49, Part 192 Regulations

* Basic knowledge of OSHA Regulations

* Basic knowledge of Pipeline Design

Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

* Valid Drivers License

Preferred:

* CWI or CPWI

* NACE Coating Inspection

* API 1169

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

* Exposure to all types of weather

* Travel may occasionally be required

* Keyboarding

* Walking of construction sites

* Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time

* Climb in/out of excavations, kneel, bend, and climb ladders to inspect pipeline construction activity
