This occupation requires tune-up, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and overhaul of automotive and other powered vehicles.

Diagnoses trouble and determines method of repair and replacement units required. Tears down, checks for trouble, cleans, replaces or repairs such mechanical units and parts as clutches, transmissions, generators, starters, fuel pumps, distributors, and brakes.

Performs such typical automotive work operations as repairing, overhauling, or replacing crankshafts, main bearings, transmissions, differentials, or clutches; installing and fitting piston rings and wrist pins; complete overhaul of various types of automotive equipment and internal combustion engines; complete diagnosis, repair, maintenance and overhaul of air conditioning systems; complete overhaul of such units as fuel-injection carburetor, starter, motors, hydraulic cylinders and generators; making major motor tune-ups.

To repair, maintain and overhaul automotive equipment and powered vehicles. To use hand tools, precision measuring instruments, electronic diagnostic equipment, and automotive equipment, tools, and gauges. To obtain and hold legally required certifications. To manually pull, push or lift over 25 lbs.
To apply a knowledge of automotive shop theory and practice. To read and interpret manufacturers' specifications, diagrams, and charges. To use arithmetic including decimals and fractions.

A Candidate is required to have the following minimum level of experience and/or training:

Five years of full-time experience within the last eight years in auto/truck/equipment repair. Experience to include gasoline and diesel engines found in all types of transportation apparatuses such as automobiles/trucks/heavy equipment.
Of the five years, two full years shall include general automotive repair and service to include minor and major repairs, i.e. maintenance, rebuilding and overhauling components, diagnosing drive-ability issues, electrical diagnosis, drivetrain repair/replacement, brake system diagnosis and repair, cooling system diagnosis and repair, suspension and steering and HVAC diagnosis and repair. In addition, two full years shall include heavy duty truck and/or equipment repair, i.e. road tractors, all-terrain moving equipment, forklifts, dump-trucks, street-sweepers, etc. These type repairs shall include maintenance, drivetrain repair/overhaul/replacement, hydraulic repair, electrical diagnosis and repair, cooling system diagnosis and repair, drive-ability issues, braking system diagnosis and repair, and pump repair and overhaul.

NOTE: Current evidence such as Certification of Completed Training and on-the-job experience is required in six of the following areas:

1. Air braking systems
2. Gasoline engine overhaul
3. Diesel engine overhaul
4. Emission systems
5. HVAC
6. Hydraulic systems
7. Electrical systems
8. Fuel Injection function and control
9. Transmission overhaul
10. Steering and suspension
11. Manual drivetrain and axles
12. Engine performance
13. Hydraulic brakes
14. Cooling systems
Basic Qualifications:
