Function
Set up and operate semi-complex, automated and non-automated external, internal surface, centerless, or thread grinding machines to perform standard grinding operations on a wide variety of semi-production and production parts.
Typical Responsibilities
Work from complicated drawings, operation sheets, general instructions, standard practices, and recognized methods to plan setups and operating procedures and perform a variety of rough and finish I.D., O.D., radius, taper, recess, groove, face, shoulder, thread and other standard grinding operations.
Use all available holding devices and make conventional holding adaptations when necessary.
In accordance with furnished recommendations or standard practice, dress and shape wheel, and select correct feed and speed to meet individual work requirements.
Maintain close tolerances, squareness, interrelated dimensions, flatness, concentricity, etc., as applicable.
Occasionally perform grinding operations consistent with regular grinding duties on tool and fixture details.
Perform other related work of a comparable or lower skill level, including deburring, polishing and part marking and check work of other operators as required.
Maintain quality standards by checking work visually and with basic measuring instruments; record data manually or electronically as required.
Perform operator checklist as required and comply with all EH&S procedures.
As required segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.
Refer to Working Leader or Supervision for assistance with unusual or complex problems, and difficult operations.
May be assigned to carry out tasks, not specifically listed, within the scope and skill level of this job description in support of department objectives and to develop individuals skills.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience: 1 to 2 years.
Requires knowledge of shop mathematics and ability to read and interpret complicated drawings and use micrometers, snap gages, comparators, dial bore gages, etc. Must be thoroughly familiar with grinding methods and procedures, types of grinding wheels and their applications to metals and conditions.
Desired Skills:
Equivalent to 2 years high school plus 2 3 years trades training.
