As a Senior Staff Engineer in the Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU) team you will enable a team of 200+ engineers, product managers and designers to develop and execute best practices in designing our systems, frameworks and products.

What youll be doing

* You will be the engineering, architecture-focused leader on the Balanced Leadership Team (Product Management, Engineering Management, Technical Leadership) for the Data Services organization within the Modern Applications business unit.

* This group is focused on developer-centric products and frameworks. Your role will encompass the oversight of engineering and architecture across the product lines of Operational and Analytical Databases, Caching, Messaging and Streaming. Our goal is to drive towards a set of common foundational data services for Tanzu.

* Technical Leads are fundamentally force multipliers and through collaborative influence they help us make better decisions, particularly as we contemplate decisions that are hard to reverse. They build networks and harvest context across multiple programs so they can ask questions like Have you thought about X? or Did you know Team Y solved this problem using X?

This will involve responsibility and accountability for:

* Leading the Data Services organization with technical acumen, architecture and best practices. To be clear, this is a leadership role but not a management role.

* Providing a Framework and Vision for teams to coalesce around to build and distribute context

* Ultimately responsible for ensuring a sense of shared context on the architecture across the organization.

* Distilling the vast technology possibilities down to concrete priorities

* Being a force multiplier - Building a bench of engineers through mentorship and example

* Working at a organization-level with leadership, product leads, technical leads, designers, and people managers in figuring out how to prepare for future work and promote context on current and future design.

* Bringing clarity where there is uncertainty, managing risk and continuously delivering value.

* Advocating for and helping create consistent/repeatable process. Making the appropriate tradeoffs between understanding requirements, architecture/design and ensuring quality implementation to deliver against the business goal

Scope of the role

* You will report to the VP of Engineering in the Data Services MAPBU organization.

* You will focus on all products, frameworks and systems that support these themes in the Data Services organization, currently 5 programs. The four products are: Tanzu Greenplum, Tanzu SQL, Tanzu Gemfire and Tanzu RabbitMQ.

* You will foster the growth of the existing technical leads assigned to each program and hire new leads as the business grows.

* You will engage regularly with cross-organization technical leads in developing R&D; standards in context sharing, process and enablement of our engineering efforts.

Desired Skills & Experience:

* 10+ years Engineering experience, especially with large scale, distributed technical solutions. Experience with data products is ideal

* Exposure navigating large enterprise organizations with an understanding of IT partnerships

* Demonstrable experience of discussing large scale systems, emerging technologies and innovation.

* Able to decompose complex problems into sets of smaller, manageable tasks.

* Strong leadership and communication skills and the ability to mentor others

* Ability to work collaboratively with others and navigate complex decision-making

* Demonstration of applying systems thinking to solve organizational problems.

* Ability to collaborate well with engineers, designers, and other partners

* Experience with Agile development methodology (such as Extreme Programming) and/or experience with development methodologies suitable for large, community-driven OSS projects.

* Comfortable with ambiguity. We work in an iterative and incremental way, balancing many different inputs and constantly making trade-offs.

* Comfortable working with a globally distributed team. We have engineers across the Americas, Europe, China and India.
