Position Summary
The Damage Prevention & Public Safety Outreach (PSO) team is responsible for delivering world class performance for Damage Prevention. The Damage Prevention & Public Safety Outreach Consultant is a team member in the Operations Controls & Compliance department. The department works to reduce safety risk and damages to underground Consumers Energy gas and electric facilities and assure CE compliance with the MISS DIG law and code required public awareness responsibilities.

This position is available at one of the following Consumers Energy locations: Jackson, Howell, Owosso

Responsibilities:

The Public Safety Outreach and Damage Prevention Team is focused on enhancing public safety and reducing asset damage for both gas and electric commodities. The Public Safety Outreach Consultant is responsible for pro-active outreach and education of the associated hazards for groups that routinely work around our systems. The primary focus areas are emergency services education and coordination, as well as damage prevention field activities such as partnering with excavators to prevent damages.

Requirements:

* Pro-actively engage public safety agencies, excavators/contractors, and representative associations to offer education and training on utility system hazards and emergency response coordination.
* Provide guidance during third-party pre-construction meetings regarding safe excavation practices
* Identify any unsafe excavation practices in the field and counsel excavators to adhere to the MISS DIG Law (both Company crews and third party contractors).
* Conduct audits of contract staking performance as it relates to the MISS DIG Law.
* Implement actions from the Damage Prevention and Public Safety Action plans.
* Attend community safety-related events to represent Consumers Energy and to promote public safety and safe excavation.
* Provide information and documentation to improve message delivery, education targets and reference/presentation materials.
* Develop and update materials to deliver safety messages and analyze data to identify target audiences and best methods of presentation.
* Serve as Liaison Officer under the Incident Command System during emergent incidents to help coordinate activities and communication between Company operations and public emergency first responders (may be on-site or in an Emergency Operations Center).
* Provide formal and informal training presentations to Public Emergency First Responders and excavators to promote safe work practices and compliance with the MISS DIG Law when working around Consumers Energys gas and electric facilities.

Requirements

* High School Diploma or GED.
* Associate degree in communications, safety, business or related degree.
* Less than an Associate degree may be acceptable if accompanied by extensive Company or industry experience in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance.

The following skills may set you apart from others:

* Bachelors Degree in a related field.
* Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
* Knowledge of gas and/or electric systems, construction activities, and Incident Command Structure.
* Knowledge in fundamentals and hazards of electricity, natural gas, gas and electric safety procedures, and gas and electric operations.
* Experience with electric storm process.
* Self-starter that can manage multiple work assignments.
* Proven leadership, analytical, decision making, problem-solving and multitasking abilities.
* Project management.
* Energy industry; Utility-related experience.
* Knowledge of PA 174 (MISS DIG Law).
* Knowledge of the Incident Command System.

Hours and Travel

Meet travel requirements of the position. Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.

Position will be filled at the appropriate salary grade based upon the skills, knowledge, and experience of the selected candidate.
