What youll be doing

Our mission at Tableau is to help people see and understand their data. The Automated Statistics team takes that one step further, using traditional statistics and machine learning to help people create predictions and make better decisions. This position involves working with a small team of start-up veterans to define and build a groundbreaking product in the analytics space. You will be working with a fast paced team and in an iterative environment, within the stability of a large company. If we are successful, people will be able to make better decisions and optimize outcomes in industries from healthcare to manufacturing and agriculture to transportation.

Some of the things you'll be doing include

* Designing a new analytical programming language, including semantics and type system.

* Building parsers, type checkers, and compilers for the language, including interactive error messages and error recovery.

* Integrating the language into an interactive, low-code environment.

* Efficiently executing simulation models over large volumes of data and Monte-Carlo simulations, with interactive performance as programs and parameters are modified.

* Creating static and dynamic program analysis capabilities that people can use to understand their simulation models.

* Building primarily in Java, and occasionally diving into React/TypeScript & C++ codebases to connect different parts of the product.

* Helping product managers and designers iteratively create and refine their plans.

* Working with the entire team in a collaborative environment where all suggestions are welcomed, and all ideas thoughtfully considered.

Let's talk about you...

* Youre Technical. You have built compilers and tool chains for general or special purpose programming languages. Experience building IDEs, debuggers, and interactive program analysis is a plus.

* Youre a Full Stack Implementer. Youre looking for a job where you can get hands on with the whole system, not just doing theory, while working with a diverse and capable team.

* You're Experienced. You have professional experience building production software in languages like C++ and Java. Experience building data analytics, IDEs, and no- or low-code platforms is a bonus.

* You're Customer-Focused. You have opinions about how users will use the product, and what problem they might run into. Being interested and willing to dive into and understand customers' problems is both helpful and rewarding.

* Youre Quality-Focused. You write code thats well-tested, performs well, and fails gracefully. Experience dealing with large datasets in a highly performant way is a bonus.

* You're Self-Motivated. You take initiative and can turn ideas into real features. You enjoy discussing use cases & user flows with product managers & designers, and contributing ideas to those discussions.

* Youre Collaborative. You enjoy collaborating with, learning from, and teaching others so we all can become better.

* Youre Respectful. You treat your colleagues with honesty, kindness, and respect and actively do your part to create a positive work environment.

* Youre Humble. You are unafraid to ask questions when you dont know the answer, and you approach disagreements with the possibility that you might be wrong.

* Youre A Recruiter! Tableau hires company builders, and you will be asked to be on constant lookout for the best talent to bring onboard to help us continue to build one of the best companies in the world!
