The editorial team at realtor.com is looking for a crack data journalist to join our team. Were seeking an experienced data cruncher who can analyze a variety of data sources and report and write compelling stories about the housing industry. Our weekly reported data features are among the most popular stories on our site, providing guidance and entertainment to our millions of readers.
Our ideal candidate will be a master at merging data, top notch reporting, and the creation of original infographics and data visualizations to tell smart, entertaining, and surprising journalistic stories. Were looking for someone who can wear several hats: idea generation, data crunching, code writing, and reporting and writing to pull it all together. Our preferred candidate would also have the ability to visually present data clearly, complementing their written stories with clean and engaging maps, charts, graphs, and/or illustrations.

The editorial team onrealtor.comreports on news, trends and advice in the real estate space, offering direction to consumers as they buy, sell, and maintain the biggest and most important purchase of their lives: their home. Data is a big part of this.
Our data stories range from insightful stories on the housing market, clickable pieces on thebest places for different kinds of buyers, and in-depth stories exploring more serious topics likePresident Trumps real estate holdingsand theimpact that state marijuana legalizations have had on local real estate prices.
The best candidates will have the chops to analyze real estate data and write up jargon-free stories based on the findings. Applicants MUST be able to perform their own analyses using complex datasets. That means they should be fluent in a programming language, such as Python or R, web-scraping and data-analysis techniques. They should have experience with statistics and data software packages, and be familiar with relationship databases like SQL. They should also be comfortable working in Microsoft Excel.

Responsibilities
* Develop unique, entertaining, and definitive real estate storiesfrom original idea to final executionincorporating data from a range of sources, both internal and external
* Determine the data sets to use, write code to query databases as needed, and masterfully crunch the numbers
* Research, report, and write witty, compelling and journalistically ambitious
* 500- to 2,200-word data stories.
* Collaborate with realtor.coms chief economist and data analysis team on data-based story ideas and initiatives.
* Create visual elements such as maps, charts, graphs and illustrations to accompany the articles.
* Provide data visualizations to augment articles and videos.
What will you bring?
Requirements
* A bachelors or masters degree in journalism or related field. Preference for candidates who have completed a data journalism or data science program.
* 5+ years of relevant experience, with a focus on data-driven reporting.
* Have a collection of data stories previously published in professional news outlets.
* A talent for turning raw data and wonky analysis into compelling stories for a broad readership
* Hands-on experience with SQL, Python or R, Tableau and a range of data-visualization tools and technologies
This is a full-time position that could be based in New York City, Santa Clara, CA, or remotely for the right candidate.
