UHG Research and Development is looking for a research scientist intern with expertise in health equity and health disparities who is passionate about social change through healthcare innovation. We are seeking a team member who enjoys the rigorous process of creating, developing, and testing innovative ideas, and can translate big ideas into real-world application. We desire someone who can think about healthcare delivery and design in unconventional ways, and sees healthcare from a holistic perspective. The research scientist intern will assist in the development of iron-clad position pieces grounded in scientific literature and that are tailored to multiple audience types (such as business, research, clinical, or policymaking).

Primary Responsibilities:

* Help our core team develop a multi-year research program to improve care delivery to reduce health disparities through technology, data analytics, and clinical interventions
* Identify emerging opportunities relevant to the promotion of health equity; stay current with developments in the field
* Dive into the relevant literature with a critical eye, incorporate data from multiple sources, and synthesize literature reviews, internal position papers, or research and investment guidance based on your findings
* Share your work with a broad audience of diverse stakeholders, both written and orally
* This internship will take place during the summer of 2021

Required Qualifications:

* Currently enrolled in a doctoral program (e.g., PhD, ScD, MD, DO, DrPH, PharmD, or a field that intersects with health equity). Must be actively enrolled in an accredited college or university for the duration of the internship
* Able to provide a writing sample that demonstrates your ability to read, understand, and communicate the results of scientific findings (e.g., literature review, thesis paper excerpt, published paper)
* Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization. F-1 visa holders with Optional Practical Training (OPT) who will require H-1B status, TNs, or current H-1B visa holders will not be considered. H1-B and green card sponsorship is not available for this position
* You will be asked to perform this role in an office setting, however, may be required to work from home temporarily due to space limitations
* Employees are required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener prior to entering the work site each day, in order to keep our work sites safe. Employees must comply with any state and local masking orders. In addition, when in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are expected to wear a mask in areas where physical distancing cannot be attained
