Job Description

The Display Systems Research (DSR) group at Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL Research) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to help conceive, build, and demonstrate novel head-mounted display systems. This individual will utilize skills in optical system design, optical system prototyping, and electromagnetic field computation. Candidates with significant experience in holographic and diffractive optical element design are encouraged. Some example DSR projects can be found on the Oculus blog, including varifocal systems, a multifocal perceptual testbed, and real-time blur synthesis. This is an opportunity to spearhead similar projects and to work with a broad range of cross-disciplinary collaborators to build new domain expertise.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Holographic Optical Elements (PhD) Responsibilities

* Design, build, and demonstrate holographic optical element fabrication systems

* Collaborate with scientists and engineers across a variety of technical backgrounds

* Contribute to publications in the field of computational displays and optics

Minimum Qualifications

* Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Optical Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics, or related fields

* 3+ years of experience working with system-level prototyping work, including individual work constructing bench-top optical systems, mechanical design, and rapid prototyping

* 3+ years of experience in working in optical laboratories

* 3+ years of experience with test automation (e.g., LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Mathematica)

* Interpersonal experience with cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

* Proven track record of achieving significant results, as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications at leading workshops or conference (e.g., OSA, SIGGRAPH, and SPIE)

* Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience with optical and materials characterization methods

* Knowledge and experience with color science, colorimetry, and visual optics

* Background in optimization methods, machine learning, and deep learning
