Western Digital is seeking a Director, Employment Law. Position Details: Position reports to the Associate General Counsel, Global Employment Law and will join a team of five labor and employment lawyers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide advice and counsel for the labor/employment needs of a global company.
* Partner with HR team members to determine strategy and approach on employment-related legal matters.
* Must provide practical solutions that meet both business and legal needs.
* Provide daily legal advice on issues such as leaves of absence, workplace accommodations, terminations, workforce restructuring actives, investigations, discipline, wage and hour, contingent workforce, workplace safety regulations (OSHA), and related matters.
* Investigate and respond to agency complaints and audits (EEOC, DFEH, DOL, OFCCP, DLSE, OSHA, etc.), attorney demand letters and internal employee complaints.
* Assist with management of employment litigation and/or arbitration.
* Remain abreast of legal developments and advise the affected department(s).
* Review or draft company policies and procedures for compliance and update as required.
* Review and draft contracts, separation agreements, and other employment-related documents.
* Coordinate responses to third party subpoenas for personnel records.
* Develop and provide training to internal clients on a variety of employment law topics.
* Ability to lead cross-functional projects.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
* JD degree with a strong academic record
* Minimum of 8 12 years of legal experience in labor and employment law with emphasis on advice and counsel experience; litigation, labor law and global experience are a plus.
* Demonstrated ability to advise clients on a broad range of employment-law issues.
* Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels in the organization.
* Able to prioritize various and, at times, conflicting demands.
* Must be able to work in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment.
* Able to recognize when to seek counsel of company leadership and/or external consultants.
* Strong work ethic and ability to produce high quality work under deadline pressures.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills and executive presence, including the ability to deliver crisp, clear and concise executive presentations.
* Excellent organizational and analytical skills and a demonstrated record of cross-functional collaboration; understands and effectively balances internal and external stakeholder requirements, expectations and needs.
* Strategic mindset; articulates credible visions of new possibilities that will create sustainable value to labor and employment compliance.
* Maneuvers comfortably through complex policy, process and people-related organizational dynamics; is sensitive to how people and organizations function and plans approach accordingly.

* Must be flexible to work varying schedules and hours as needed, working at times with global teams in other time zones. Regular travel between San Jose and Orange County required; occasional travel to other locations
REQUIRED:
* Minimum 8-10 years of experience in labor and employment law, including counseling and litigation experience; deep California Labor/Employment law experience required; global and prior in-house experience at a public company are a plus.
* Candidate must be able to work independently in a team oriented culture. Must be able to manage multiple projects.
* Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
* Candidate must be comfortable interfacing directly with managers and department leaders.
* Must have a law degree from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in the state of California.
