The Operations Manager leads the Operations staff and manages all aspects of operations of a power plant to ensure safe, environmentally compliant, and efficient operations of the plant.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Responsible for all plant equipment
Leads Plant Operations in alignment with Safety, Environmental and Conduct of Operations policies
Actively supports and emphasizes importance of safety and environmental programs and ensures regulatory compliance
Promotes productivity and teamwork in Operations with open communication, timely decision making, and use of personal leadership skills to set high standards of performance while providing the direction necessary to achieve that performance
Champion Human Performance and the use of Error-Reduction tools
Provides leadership in the lock out/tag out program in order to promote safe operations and maintenance
Monitors plant and unit performance, conducts root cause analysis, and leads investigations to develop and implement corrective actions.
Optimize Unit performance using PI and available data.
Responsible for plant cycle chemistry
Sets maintenance priorities and schedules maintenance for the plant in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager
Coordinates unit load scheduling, testing, status, outage plans and acts as primary interface with Commercial Operations for reporting unit status and capabilities
Ensures proper training is being provided to Plant Operators
Ensures development, implementation and monitoring of work schedules and plans in their work area of responsibility
Ensures regulatory compliance and collects and submits evidence in support of NERC reliability standards
Maintains communications with other areas of the Company including Safety, Environmental, Human Resources, Fuels, and Corporate Management Teams to coordinate activities and facilitate process improvement initiatives
Performs field inspections of job sites and work or operational evolutions in progress
Recognizes problems and is proactive in helping to resolve them
Administers and participates in the resolution of labor issues
Assists in coordinates emergency response efforts (i.e. winter and summer readiness, freeze protection, integrated contingency plan, spill response plan, etc.)
Provides regular feedback to employees on their performance to allow them to capitalize on their strength and focus on opportunities for improvement
Develops, implements, and revises operational policies and procedures to improve plant performance and ensure consistent operations between crews.
Able to fulfill the responsibilities of the Plant Manager position in their absence
Working Conditions:
Normal power plant and office environment
Work overtime and non-standard working hours as required
Requires occasional travel
Required to work around rotating and energized equipment
Minimum Requirements:
Associates degree
Minimum 8 years of power plant experience
Minimum of 5 years of full-time supervisory experience within a fossil fuel power plant
Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record as well as the ability to drive between sites/locations as needed
Work overtime and non-standard working hours as required
The position is a DOT PHMSA covered position and requires the successful candidate to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and drug and alcohol testing background check, and once placed will be a participant in the NRG DOT Program
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a Technical related field
Background in plant performance
Supercritical experience

Knowledge of power plant systems and operations, and comprehensive knowledge in the area of responsibility
Demonstrated effective leadership and personnel management skills
Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a team environment
Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) at all levels of NRG
Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with all individuals
Strong organizational skills and capability of handling multiple projects simultaneously

Strong strategic business sense and industry knowledge/experience

Physical Requirements:
Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect, or collect data on plant equipment.
Routinely requires wearing personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, earplugs, etc.).
May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials, and chemicals.
Requires operation of a personal computer.
Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
