This position is part of our Global Product Organization and will support the development of our perception systems products.

Responsibilities:

The Optical Systems Engineer will design, develop, build and test systems and products based on optic, photonic, LED and laser technologies.  The position will include interaction with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems which includes: specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation.  The Optical Systems Engineer will recommend modifications to the development of new photonic products and/or design changes that improve performance of existing products.

The position will involve engineering analysis in the following disciplines: camera signal-to-noise (S/N), fixed focus lens design, illumination optical design for collimation optics and/or LED or Laser sources.  It requires participation in optical system design combining lasers (and/or LEDs), visible and/or near-infrared objective lenses and optical detectors in a compact, thermally stabilized design.

The Optical Systems Engineer will review customer specifications, document requirements and develop component specifications based on requirements.  The position will include support of product design reviews, hardware prototype builds and product tests and preparation of performance reports or analysis suitable for internal and customer review.

Must Haves (Basic Qualifications):

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering or Physics with emphasis in optical design and packaging
5+ years (BS) or 3+ years (MS) of related experience
Familiarity with image quality metrics including Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), glare, distortion and other camera performance measures
Working understanding of applied optical design and simulation using Zemax tools
Experience designing and verifying optical systems to specifications, both in simulations and in the laboratory
Ability to communicate effectively with multiple disciplines as well as all levels of leadership
Willingness to travel if required

Nice to Haves (Preferred Qualifications):

PhD with 2 years of related experience
Experience with automotive cameras, optics and vision systems
Familiarity with radiometers, imaging photometry and lens testing equipment
Optical design experience with ray trace analysis software (e.g. Zemax, CodeV, LightTools, etc.)
Experience transitioning designs to production
