Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Automation Engineer - Automated Guided Vehicle will oversee the system design, installation, cycle time analysis, key performance indicators (KPIs), routes and commissioning of automated guided vehicle (AGV) automation equipment for the plant. The equipment consists of a fleet of 35 AGVs with potential near-term expansion to 50+ by middle of 2025. This position is expected to manage the entire fleet of AGVs per the department’s yearly objectives, be the primary contact for the plant with the AGV vendor, seek solutions to technical problems, implement changes in hardware/software/routes and possess the technical capability to challenge the vendor for overall improvements. The incumbent will manage and motivate plant personnel (where necessary) to allow the AGVs to run optimally for performance/reliability to meet the needs of the plant.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Drive Safety: - Thoroughly understand all technical aspects of the AGVs and be able to operate vehicles (both manually and in automatic) and modify AGV routes (where necessary)
Drive improvements in the AGV fleet for loading/unloading non-powered equipment. Work with the Industrial Engineer (IE) department regularly for cycle-time analysis of fleet.
Manage plant operational risks (as it pertains to the AGV fleet) and ensure that plant personnel are in adherence to all powered industrial vehicle (PIV) and AGV traffic rules in the plant. Perform administrative tasks (including scheduling, budget management/cost control, issuance of weekly reports, parts management, etc).
Perform KPI analysis to understand whether the performance of the fleet is within acceptable range. Analyze data from fleet supervisory software to track performance/reliability versus the KPIs set by the department.
Effectively manage communications between the AGV vendor, Goodyear Lawton team members, plant stakeholders, Global Engineering and others to coordinate additional work, resolve issues promptly or for input on new tasks for the fleet.
Education & Certifications:
Required: Bachelors degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
Desired: Masters degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
Experience:
5 or more years of experience in automation and integration in a manufacturing environment
Work with vision guided or automated transportation devices
Experience with manufacturing equipment installation and commissioning
Experience user of AutoCAD two-dimensional drafting software
Knowledge, Skills & Capabilities:
Understanding of safe work practices and knowledge of environmental concerns and requirements
Familiarity with best practices for equipment reliability - Able to lead electrical equipment check-out/start-up and troubleshoot
Knowledge of industry and government specifications/standards for AGVs
Good communication/presentation skills
Ability to read and interpret single line/schematic wiring diagrams, plan/installation detail drawings, (PLC) control logic, etc.
Ability to verify electrical drawings and installations for compliance with Goodyear/industry/government standards and specifications
Ability to demonstrate effective teamwork, maintain a professional demeanor and foster positive relationships inside and outside of the team
Technical familiarity with pneumatic/hydraulic control and safety systems - Desired
