Union Pacific's Law Department is looking for an Assistant General, General or Sr General attorney to join our Labor, Employment & Safety team in its Omaha, Nebraska headquarters. The qualified candidate will support Union Pacific and its 32,000+ employees by representing the company in court and before administrative law judges on personal injury and whistleblower matters as well as providing risk optimized and strategic advice and counsel on employment and safety matters. Reporting to the Senior Counsel, Law, this attorney will assist the Labor, Employment and Safety team providing practical business-oriented and strategic legal counseling to business leaders. Experience in or representing the rail industry would be a distinct advantage. The selected candidate will be well-respected and sought out for his/her legal excellence, high intelligence, business judgment, work ethic and pragmatism. The selected candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, leadership and technical expertise that will assist them in confidently seeking to drive solutions for Union Pacific.

Serve as legal counsel to Union Pacific Railroad.

Accountabilities

Support Union Pacific's legal function and have responsibility for a broad range of employment, personal injury and safety issues
Represent Union Pacific in federal, state and administrative courts
Serve as a tactical business partner and trusted legal advisor to business clients
Work with the employment, safety and personal injury teams in the Law Department to establish processes, structure, methodologies and procedures that create efficiencies, reduce costs and increase client service timing and orientation, as needed
Advise clients regarding relevant regulatory legal issues, topics and legislative initiatives, and proactively monitor industry and regulatory trends
Build and maintain a positive and influential relationship with key business stakeholders, including operations, safety, and human resources
Direct the advice to management on day-to-day employee relations matters and develop business-focused solutions
Work with management, business leaders and the Compliance function to maintain a culture of safety and compliance
Stay on the cutting edge of employment, and litigation legal trends and take proactive, affirmative steps to minimize potential legal exposure for the Company

Qualifications

Required

A Juris Doctor degree
Excellent customer service, and time and project management skills
Excellent problem-solving skills to deliver practical and proactive legal counsel
Strong writing, communication, and legal analysis skills
Ability to develop and deliver training sessions and related educational tools regarding preventative law and compliance to reduce Company exposure to legal risk
Ability to distill complex issues clearly and help devise solutions in a direct, professional manner
Self-starter who is capable of making solid judgment calls under pressure and working well both independently and as part of a team
Ability to anticipate emerging employment & legal trends and design and implement strategies and tactics to address them
High ethical standards and integrity
Experience with employee privacy, whistleblower, ADA, FMLA, WARN, and EEO
Admitted to practice law
At least 3 years of experience in employment and litigation at a top-tier law firm
Trial and litigation experience in state, federal and/or administrative courts

Preferred

Experience with labor matters, including arbitrations and negotiations
Experience managing attorneys and other legal professionals
Experience and exposure to the rail industry, including FRSA, RLA and FELA
