Permian Basin Overview

ConocoPhillips and its heritage companies have operated in the Permian Basin for almost 100 years. Across New Mexico and Texas, the company holds conventional positions in the Northwest Shelf and Central Basin Platform, and an unconventional position in the Delaware Basin. Permian saw significant growth in 2021 with the acquisition of Concho Resources Inc. in January 2021 and the addition of Shell’s Permian acreage in December 2021. At year-end, the company held approximately 1.5 million net acres in the Permian Basin.

Net production for the Permian in 2021 was 442 MBOED.

Description

If you are selected as the Drilling Engineering Advisor, you will be tasked with providing technical and operational support to the Permian Business Unit. This role will focus primarily on driving a physics-based performance culture, standardizing the best operational practices, and identifying / trialing new technologies.

Your responsibilities may include:

Manage long-term rig technology initiatives and advise team on required steps to achieve success (e.g. drilling automation)
Identify opportunities to maximize drilling performance, evaluates drilling trends, and lead development of Permian-specific standard processes
Investigate unordinary failure events and work with vendors to resolve any design / quality related issues
Promote a physics-based performance culture and lead performance initiatives
Evaluate new technologies and lead field trial development to confirm viability
Perform non-routine engineering modeling as needed for both the planning and the execution phases
Interface with Global Wells organization and integrate training programs into Permian Business Unit

Basic/Required:

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or national, or an alien admitted as a permanent resident, refugee or asylee
10+ years of experience in drilling (engineering and/or operations)

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, other related discipline, or foreign equivalent
Extensive experience in Drilling Mechanics, Forensic Analysis, and developing Performance Drilling Workflows
Knowledge of specific topics such as BHA Design, Real-Time Optimization, and Extended Reach Drilling
Mentor early-career engineers and promote physics-based engineering fundamentals
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
Takes ownership of actions and follows through on dedications by holding others accountable and standing up for what's right
Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
Builds effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical
Listens actively and invites new ideas for exchanged opinions, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results
