Job Description

Do you want to be part of a culture that encourages employees to envision the impossible, perform with excellence and build incredible products? Are you looking for a growth opportunity where you can use your initiative to make a difference to a very important mission? Lockheed Martin Space is the prime contractor building NASA's Orion, the only spacecraft designed for long-duration, human-rated deep space exploration. Orion will transport astronauts to interplanetary destinations beyond low Earth orbit, such as the Moon and Mars, and return them safely back to Earth.

As a Mechanical Engineer on the Orion Program, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership of Aeroshell engineering tasks, including sustainment of composite and metallic structures and Thermal Protection System (TPS) hardware across the vehicle, with a primary focus on the crew module. You will be expected to coordinate with other Aeroshell senior engineers, Aeroshell Engineering Management, and Cost Accounting Management to properly allocate team engineering resources, support proposal work, control costs, release engineering, support manufacturing, interrogate hardware nonconformances, address requirements verification and integrate test efforts to certify and deliver aeroshell structural hardware and TPS components of the spacecraft.

Other responsibilities may include:

• Technical leadership and mentoring of junior engineers
• Participating in sustainment activities like anomaly resolution, supplier and manufacturing/ATLO support, Quality Note (Qnote) resolution and corrective actions, vendor requests for Information (VRICs) and test flags and anomalies
• Ability to work with in house manufacturing, ATLO, and outside suppliers to drive delivery of critical program hardware that meets requirements within applicable cost and schedule constraints
• Maintenance of the design configuration baseline to ensure continued certification compliance
• Assessment of performance against the baseline requirements
• Analysis of trends, and development of options to resolve production and operational issues
• Review requirements from various sources (dynamics, stress, systems, thermal, manufacturing, etc.) to ensure that applicable requirements are flowed into the detailed design of the products

Lockheed Martin Corporation is an American global aerospace, defense, security and advanced technologies company with worldwide interests. It was formed by the merger of Lockheed Corporation with Martin Marietta in March 1995, and Loral Federal Systems in 1996. It is headquartered in North Bethesda, Maryland, in the Washington, DC, area. Lockheed Martin employs approximately 100,000 people worldwide as of December 2017.

Lockheed Martin is one of the largest companies in the aerospace, defense, security, and technologies industry. It is the world's largest defense contractor based on revenue for fiscal year 2014. In 2013, 78% of Lockheed Martin's revenues came from military sales; it topped the list of US federal government contractors and received nearly 10% of the funds paid out by the Pentagon. Lockheed Martin operates in four business segments: Aeronautics, Missiles and Fire Control, Rotary and Mission Systems, and Space Systems. The company has received the Collier Trophy six times, including in 2001 for being part of developing the X-35/F-35B LiftFan Propulsion System, and most recently in 2006 for leading the team that developed the F-22 Raptor fighter jet. Lockheed Martin is currently developing the F-35 Lightning II and leads the international supply chain, leads the team for the development and implementation of technology solutions for the new USAF Space Fence (AFSSS replacement), and is the primary contractor for the development of the Orion command module. The company also invests in healthcare systems, renewable energy systems, intelligent energy distribution and compact nuclear fusion.
