The Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory (LMSAL) has an immediate opening for a Research Scientist to support existing science missions expand our efforts in space weather modeling. Current missions at LMSAL include the recently selected Extreme Ultraviolet Solar Telescope (EUVST), the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO/AIA and HMI), and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). LMSAL is a department of the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Palo Alto, CA.

The ATC is the research lab for LM Space, and the SS&I directorate within the ATC pursues fundamental space science research through analysis of mission data and modeling of heliophysical phenomena. The successful candidate will play a key technical role and grow into a leadership role in Heliophysics Science as part of these teams.

Duties for this role include:

• Support for pursuing research in solar and space weather through numerical modeling of major geo-effective CME events and comparing the results with in-situ and remote sensing observations
• Analyzing multi-wavelength observations of the Sun
• Simulating stellar winds and stellar CMEs and their influences on the habitability of the exo-planets.

You will also be encouraged to conduct supporting research and/or to seek external funding in order to pursue research commensurate with your training and expertise.

We are ideally looking for someone with a PhD in heliophysics or a similar scientific discipline. You should possess excellent scientific skills with experience working with the CME and solar wind MHD models. We particularly seek someone with a solid publication history and experience as a Principal Investigator Co-Investigator on NASA Heliophysics programs. You will also possess strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills, along with the ability and willingness to work in technical teams. Some domestic and international travel will be required.

You would typically have a PhD and 4+ years of professional experience, a Masters and 7+ years, or a Bachelors and 9+ years.

Basic Qualifications:

• PhD degree in a field related Heliophysics
• Research application relevant to space weather
• Demonstrated technical experience with space weather MHD simulations
• U.S. citizenship or green card/permanent resident status

Desired Skills:

• PhD degree in Heliophysics, preferably with application relevant to Space Weather
• Emerging leader in the Heliophysics Science technical professional community, based on publications, academic interfaces, and professional contacts, capable of being a Principal Investigator of Co-Investigator on NASA science contracts and/or missions.
