POSITION OVERVIEW

Kiewit Infrastructure Engineering (KIE) has an immediate opening for a dynamic Senior Tunnel Ventilation Engineer in our growing Rail Transit Systems Group. The Senior Tunnel Ventilation Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of the development of ventilation concepts and strategies using One Dimensional (1D) and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation tools, determination of tenability and life safety requirements and the design of associated systems.  In addition, the applicant must have a proven track record and the ability to calculate boundary conditions and critical velocities for the analysis and subsequent performance of fire and life safety designs.  The primary function of this position is to provide senior consultancy services in the analysis and design of ventilation of fire & life safety systems on transit/highway tunnel, industrial, commercial and process facilities across North America. The Senior CFD engineer will participate in the definition of semi-complex and complex tunnel, fire and life safety systems projects, selecting appropriate mix of products and installation methods.

You will be part of our rapidly growing Infrastructure Design Department, which includes structural, geotechnical, civil, drainage, roadway, rail, and materials disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on the design-build delivery of infrastructure projects.

LOCATION

This position is based out of our Raliegh Durham, NC or San Jose, CA office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for developing strategies, performing analyses and design related to tunnel ventilation, fire & life safety services.
Review/preparation of design criteria documents, technical reports, calculations, drawings and specifications, heating and cooling load calculations, loss calculations, design and layout of fan rooms and mechanical rooms for tunnel and transit ventilation systems and development of mode of operation tables.
Working within multi-disciplinary teams and managing projects and work packages.
The ability to ‘read’ and understand detailed structural, mechanical and electrical design drawings and correctly develop models that accurately reflect the tunnels network, station(s) and facilities.
Liaison with external stakeholders as required.
Providing support during design and construction activities.
Attending meetings with clients, agency and project team.
Project assignments may include, although not be limited to, vehicular or rail tunnels, transportation centers, transit maintenance facilities, parking structures, pump stations, bridges, airports, oil & gas process facilities.
Supporting business development and proposal efforts as required.
Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise.
Participates in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.
Uses expertise in all steps of completing discipline component of PS&E package.
Assist in the commissioning of fire protection/life safety systems in commercial, institutional and industrial facilities.
Prepare technical reports and documentation of activity for the client and project management
Ability to select technology, devices, equipment and/or components to meet performance requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

•    California PE License
•    Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
•    Minimum 7+ years of progressive work experience and thorough understanding of the following, but not limited to.
o    In depth understanding and a proven track record in the application of fluid flow equation
o    Expert knowledge of the current regulatory requirements for tunnel ventilation and fire safety, including experience in railways and underground spaces, including NFPA 130 and NFPA 502 in particular.  Knowledge of PIARC/WRC and other international standards would be beneficial.
o    Must have experience in report preparation, and supervision of less experienced engineers, designers and technicians
o    Communicates effectively across all departments of organization
o    Works collaboratively across departments and with field to solve problems
o    Initiates meetings within own team, other disciplines or internal customers for clarity on work
o    Supports project teams and departments in a positive and productive manner. Works well with other to accomplish common goals and objectives.
o    Serves as technical resource to engineers, designers and other departments
o    Continuously looking for ways to improve processes for customers and makes recommendations for improvements.
