The Tax Accountant is responsible for the timely, accurate and compliant preparation of multistate fuel tax and sales/use tax obligations. Working as a vital member of the Tax Team, this role helps ensure Company compliance with federal and state regulations, performs tax-related accounting functions such as journal entries and reconciliations, analyzes and researches complicated tax issues, and provides audit support.
General Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares tax returns, including payments and filings, in a timely, accurate and compliant manner.
Analyzes vendor/customer invoices, prepares tax journal entries and reconciles tax general ledger accounts.
Responds to state and other tax entity requests in a prompt, accurate and professional manner, satisfying tax audit requirements.
Mitigates audit penalties through strict adherence to state tax regulations and maintains thorough records and documentation, including customer tax certificates.
Works on special projects as assigned.
Pursues and builds technical knowledge through internal and external resources.
Other duties as assigned.
Regular attendance at the worksite is required. With approval, the Tax Accountant may work from home up to two days per week, following 180 days of training, a satisfactory performance assessment and only during non-compliance periods of the month.
Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of GAAP with ability to apply accounting principles to tax-related matters.
Strong analytical and reasoning skills including ability to research and resolve tax issues.
Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint) with advanced Excel skills required (e.g., pivot tables, v-lookups, macros).
Demonstrated competency using enterprise accounting software and other systems, including tax research software, Oracle or other general ledger systems, and sales/use tax compliance software.
Willingness to share, and ability to transfer, knowledge, skills and technical information to team members.
High self-motivation and commitment to excellence, with ability to work independently and as part of a team to establish goals, meet deadlines and improve processes.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to interact and clearly communicate with taxing authorities, external customers and colleagues at all levels.

Experience/Education:
Bachelors degree in accounting or related field.
1 – 5 years of accounting experience, with 1 year of experience in a public accounting firm or a corporation with significant tax compliance obligations.
Experience with tax software and general ledger systems is required; experience with Oracle/Debits & Credits is preferred.
Familiarity with oil and gas industry is a plus.
