Job Description

What you will be doing:

Providing cross-functional technical leadership and working with the Flavor Group on the sensorial characteristics of flavor ingredients, compounded flavors, processing aids, specification changes, flavor reformulations, final products, and non-conforming products.
Using technical expertise to develop strategies and provide direction in the sensory maintenance of Atria’s Core Tobacco Products and the development of new flavor systems and flavor processes for Reduced Harm Products. Serving as project manager and technical leader on cross-functional projects for new product and new flavor process creation from development to commercialization.
Developing recommendations and implementing quality solutions to reduce manufacturing complexity and costs related to flavor materials and/or processes.
Building capability for future talent through training and mentoring less experienced flavorists.
Leading and directing the creation, implementation, and maintenance of the appropriate documentation for flavor systems, product, and process changes to be aligned with Altria’s Quality Systems, records Management and Product Integrity Requirements in support of legal and regulatory requirements.
Providing support to other flavorists to compile, document and handle information flow between Flavorists and Procurement, Regulatory Sciences and Product Development groups relating to sourcing and utilization of flavors.
Leading partnerships with Procurement and external vendors to improve technical and process capabilities and capacity for flavor related initiatives
Developing and implementing Regulatory strategies for potential flavor bans at the state and federal level as well as building an understanding of the Regulatory requirements for Flavor Ingredient reporting.

What we want you to have:

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry/Biology or Food Science preferred
5+ years of experience in the creation of flavors for the tobacco, food, beverage or pharma industry (or other related field)
Advanced knowledge of flavor ingredients, process aids, suppliers and flavor application equipment and technologies are preferred
In-depth knowledge of flavor compounding, chemistry and interaction/reaction of flavor ingredients. Must provide experienced knowledge of flavor ingredients, flavor application, equipment, and technologies
Ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to internal and external partners
User of nicotine products is preferred
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Role will be based at our Center for Research and Technology in Richmond, VA with some flexibility to work remotely
