The Segment Strategist is responsible for defining and prioritizing marketplace opportunities, particularly from a consumer perspective, to support marketing and business stakeholders and their business goals.

This role leverages the Marketing Strategy Center’s segment-oriented view of the marketplace as well as internal and external data and research to inform marketing and business strategy and tactics, including market identification, market prioritization, and positioning opportunities. The role is also responsible for proactively evaluating growth opportunities and/or new value drivers for the company through market expansion and penetration. This role also supports the development, launch, and positioning of products across New York Life’s Foundational Businesses and select parts of the Strategic Businesses. The role helps our partner answer questions such as “Who should we target?, Why? How can we best target them? Where do we have untapped market opportunity?”

Key Responsibilities:

Partner with business leads across Marketing and Product to create proactive, ad hoc, and responsive strategic recommendations that better deliver on objectives while aligning with our overarching brand strategy and client value proposition.
Refine portfolio positioning in context of Foundational Business client value proposition and new, expanded offerings (Life, LTC, IDI, Business Solutions).
Support audience identification and development of positioning, naming and messaging architecture of our product suite and business lines.
Define B2B2C value proposition for New York Life Group Benefit Solutions that leverages the strengths of NYL and brings greater relevance and differentiation to our Group Insurance/broker-distributed business.
Leverage industry and business knowledge to provide sounding board and acid test for all work.
Partner with Marketing Strategy teammates to source and evaluate data and insights and see where/how to use data and insights to infuse and influence work being done within Marketing and product development.
Proactively seek out and understand external market trends and apply insights to strategic recommendations.

Skills and Experience

Bachelor's degree required; experience in financial services and/or MBA a plus
10+ years in marketing strategy, business strategy, product/consumer marketing and or related field
Analytical thinker with a proven ability to understand and impact business drivers through actionable recommendations
Proven ability to influence without direct reporting relationships, across multiple levels of the organization
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Exceptional PowerPoint skills, especially experience building strategy and/or reader decks
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
