Description
Reporting into the Tax Counsel Operations group, this Tax Counsel or Tax Consultant role will have responsibility for legal support for domestic tax issues, including partnership tax and severance tax matters, and assistance with state tax controversies.
This position is based in Houston, Texas.
Your responsibilities may include:
Provide legal support for ConocoPhillips’s tax partnerships and develop tax efficient structures
Provide tax technical support to severance tax group, including responding to audit requests and working with outside counsel on litigation
Work with state tax group on tax planning opportunities and aid in tax controversies

Position Deliverables – Accomplishments expected to be achieved within the first year:
Develop in-depth knowledge of ConocoPhillips’s tax attributes and businesses
Become established as a contact person for partnership tax, severance tax, and state tax audit and controversy matters
Develop trust by Senior Management in using proper judgment to raise issues as appropriate
Basic/Required:
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or national, or an alien admitted as a permanent resident, refugee or asylee
Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination, by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination, or ConocoPhillips approved accommodation, required
Master's degree or Juris Doctorate of Taxation, or foreign equivalent
5+ years of tax experience in Fortune 100 multi-national, national accounting or law firms
5+ years of combined U.S. technical experience in any of the following areas:
Federal Taxation
State & Local Taxation
Severance Taxation
Partnership taxation
Preferred:
LL.M. in Tax, CPA, or foreign equivalent
Strong college and law school record
Strong analytical, research, and writing skills
Strong ethical standards and business judgment
Strong desire to develop and advance within the Tax Department
Teammate able to work independently, exercise initiative, interface at high levels and communicate efficiently
