Job Description

Responsibilities:

Contribute to an algorithm roadmap, contributing with your own expertise and expanding to include journal publications, research labs, national labs, academia, and industry partnerships.
Create and foster relationships with university research groups to obtain the latest research and implementations of battery models and algorithms.
Contribute to a portfolio of battery models and algorithms, such as open circuit voltage (OCV) prediction with hysteresis, state of charge (SOC) tracking with real-time error correction, capacity learning over life, estimation of internal cell temperature and thermal gradients, internal resistance estimation, frequency-dependent impedance estimation, lifetime prediction, and state of health (SOH) reporting.
Your supervisors will be a lead electrochemist, responsible for managing the battery testing laboratory, and the lead BMS Algorithm Engineer, responsible for the algorithm roadmap and portfolio.
Interface to customers and understand the usage scenario, load cycle, conditions, and performance envelope expected from the battery management models and algorithms.
Interface to the battery manufacturer to understand the properties, limitations, and capabilities of the battery chemistry. Understand the data available from the manufacturer and what data is needed to fill in the gaps.
Have expertise in contactor control, thermal management, diagnostic, fault scenarios, and cell balancing, based on the customer and battery type.
Supervise experiments to test and validate each algorithm subcomponent using the battery laboratory with growth possibilities as the program progresses from cell-level to full-size electric vehicle battery pack systems.
Maintain relationships with outside battery testing laboratories for tests not suitable for the internal battery laboratory.

Candidate Profile

Ideally you have an advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) applicable to understanding and modeling battery performance. Expertise in understanding lithium-ion batteries, advanced testing methods, data analysis, algorithm modeling, and working with academia and university professors are critical elements for success.

This experience combined with a track record of relevant technical innovation, curiosity, communication, structured analytical thinking, sound business judgment and true leadership skills would make you successful in this role.

Must Haves (Basic Qualifications):

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, computer science or equivalent technical field from an accredited institution
A deep interest and/or domain expertise in lithium-ion battery technology, chemistry variants, electrode and cell fabrication methods, and methods to model their performance and behavior.
Familiarity with battery modeling techniques and the ability to blend physical, empirical, analytical, equivalent circuit, and stochastic models to achieve the desired output parameter.
Understanding of lithium-ion electrochemistry effects as applies to simulation and modeling, such as SEI formation and growth, irreversible and reversible lithium plating, anode-cathode slippage, etc.
Familiarity with modeling techniques, including Randles Equivalent Circuits, single particle models, Ficks law of diffusion, multidimensional Kalman filtering, extended Kalman filters.
Ability to create novel test methods to characterize customized model parameters using industry-standard battery cycles, EIS, thermal chambers, or create custom test apparatus using equipment such as power supplies, active loads, and National Instruments control software.
Develop and foster relationships with university professors to work on cooperative research grants.
Values and behaviors that align with Aptiv’s, our cultural aspirations and deep commitment to doing the right thing, the right way.
Great energy, tenacity, and resourcefulness that inspires a team to be more technically curious in a practical way that delivers production ready designs and concepts.
Effective decision-making skills in resource management, people staffing and technical trade-offs.
Strong communication skills that translate the benefits of technical advances to customers and convert technical discussions into clear value proposition driven sales.
Industry contacts and/or potential hires to the team that you’ve worked with in the past who could help us build a world class team, and establish the necessary technical partnerships and connect with customers and suppliers at all necessary levels.
