Job Summary:
Markel Corporation, a Fortune 300 Company, is seeking a Senior Underwriter in Markel's Surety Division in Houston.
In this position, the primary responsibilities will include:
Underwrite contract bonds adhering to Markel Surety’s underwriting philosophy, appropriately assessing the risk presented and properly managing that risk
Conduct all forms of marketing to strategically build a profitable book in a designated territory.
Demonstration of the knowledge and apply the skills required at a Senior Underwriter level, including knowledge of required and normal ratios, bonding, risks associated with various types of construction activities, competition’s underwriting attitudes and industry norms for all issues.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and/or 4 years of experience in profitable contract surety underwriting required;
Existing contract account business and agency/producer relationships preferred
Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of increasing responsibility.
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and skilled presentation aptitude.
Technologically savvy; proficient in MS Office
Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment.
Flexible to travel approximately 30% when appropriate
Ability to work in the Houston TX office on a hybrid model basis.
