Polymer Chemist - New Product Development

Job Description

Responsibilities:

 

The successful candidate will develop new technology platforms for high temperature engineering thermoplastics and collaborate with product development, application development and marketing to commercialize these platforms.  Work with external and internal customers to translate functional requirements to product requirements
Use a variety of sources and ideation techniques to develop new technology concepts that enable new product properties as well as applications
Investigate potential new chemical synthesis routes and process technologies to produce high-performance polymers
Develop and refine kinetic, thermodynamic and reactor models for monomer and polymerization processes to enable higher capital efficiency, productivity, product consistency and product flexibility.
Drive process development rigor to improve process cost situation and implement new technologies in plant manufacturing processes.
Develop and establish intellectual property through filing of patents and documenting trade

Qualifications:

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

PhD. Chemistry/Polymer Science or Engineering/Chemical Engineering/Materials Science or related 
5+ years of industry or academic experience in polymer synthesis, product development, or process development
Working knowledge of analytical characterization techniques for rheological, mechanical, thermal properties
Background in polymer synthesis and polymer structure-property relationships
Background in fundamental engineering principles including heat & mass transfer, unit operations, reaction engineering, fluid mechanics and modeling
Familiarity with reactor design and process considerations for batch and continuous production systems; the use of process simulation tools for complex chemical processes; with polymer chemistry and rheology; with statistical tools and design of experiments; chemical analysis and material characterization techniques
Ability to work safely in an industrial environment; must be able to assess and minimize risk potential of new chemistries and processes
Project management and organizational skills required to develop detailed project time-lines with key milestones and deliverables
Works well in team environment and possess the interpersonal and communication skills needed to work effectively in cross-functional teams to drive project from lab-to-commercial scale
