Job Summary

We currently have an opening within our Electrical Systems team within I &A for a creative, self-driven and talented R & D engineer that will work in a broad range of technologies: ADAS, Enhanced vehicle controls, UX concepts, IoT, wireless communication and Infotainment to name a few.  The position will be hybrid with time flexible between a home office and on-site at our Harley-Davidson Motor Company Product Development Center and travel as needed to suppliers, industry events and our Arizona Proving Grounds.  
This position will be responsible for research, analysis, design, integration and summary reports and presentations of prototype concepts on individual as well as team projects – often with more than one in process at a time.  The candidate needs to have a history of being self-directed based on high-level input and will also interact and partner with other areas of the Product Development organization including Product Planning, Styling/Industrial Design, test labs, production engineering teams, 

Job Responsibilities

Take high-level voice-of-customer wants and translate into design concepts and functional demonstrators based on leveraging existing and evolving technologies while still balancing feasibility, robust designs and cost and effort to implement in a high-volume production environment.
Independently solve complex technical issues and provide solutions to problems using both creative processes and analytical methods. 
Technology prospecting for unique solutions and features via industry research and staying aware of evolving technology developments.  Investigation of a company’s components and technologies beyond just surface marketing materials to determine their true feasibility and potential customer and business value.
Work in both an individual as well as part of a team to deliver POC vehicles and systems.
Generate timing and cost plans for concept development and feature maturity.  Partner with cross-functional teams and suppliers to meet program and build milestones.  Identify risks and propose mitigations.
Provide input to define roadmap for future features and functions with internal stakeholders to exceed rider expectations.

Education Specifications

Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or a related technical Degree.  

Experience Requirements

Required

Requires a minimum of 8 years of professional experience in a technical field, with prior technical problem-solving experience.
Strong interest in motorcycle engineering and design.
Knowledge of whole-vehicle systems with detailed electrical system/component choice, software design, electrical design & integration experience.  Ability to work beyond electrical engineering and apply basic electro-mechanical engineering skills/experience.
Proven experience in hands-on proof-of-concept development – including electrical hardware, software, and integration tasks. Experience with developmental controllers and programming languages preferred.
Ability to communicate technical subjects in a clear, concise manner to multiple levels of the organization as well as leading and influencing cross-functional team members without direct authority.
Proven experience in a creative approach to solving problems and able to own issue resolution from data collection, data analysis, root cause identification, solution set generation, and selection of optimal solution.
Success using project management tools and principles to deliver on-time and within budget.
Ability to work with diverse global teams both internally and externally (suppliers).

Preferred

Direct motorcycle or vehicle engineering experience (e.g. automotive, power sports, construction, agriculture, aerospace, marine).
Although not required, riding experience is a plus. 
Experience in developing code in multiple programming languages (C++, Python, Java, etc…) as needed for creating proof of concept functionality.  Model-based programming experience a plus.
IoT and app development experience sufficient to vet new feature concepts (production level development not required)
Electrical System design/development experience from concept through production launch. 
Demonstrates in depth conceptual and practical knowledge in engineering tools such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models and drawings, as well as predictive analysis and conventional engineering calculations to demonstrate and communicate robustness of designs.
