Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: 

Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Surgical Technologist scrubs for procedures and performs other duties related to the preparation and maintenance of the operating room environment and assists with the peri-operative care of patients. Level II is the basic standard level of expectation for all Surgical Technologists. It requires national certification within 18-24 months of employment or MGH equivalent exam for those no longer eligible for the national exam within one year of movement to Level II. The ST at this level precepts with a cluster of services and is a resource person within the cluster.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

1.0          Works with the surgical health team under the direct supervision of a registered nurse to provide care to the patient during the intra-operative period.

                1.1          Performs scrub duties according to procedure.

                1.2          Selects and organizes supplies and equipment specific to the proposed surgical procedure by accessing the preference cards. Has the knowledge and understanding of service specific specialty instrumentation and equipment. Able to problem solve instrumentation issues.

               1.3          Anticipates changes and makes adjustments in case preparation according to the variation in the surgical procedure. Effectively prioritize and organize work activities.

               1.4           Cares for instruments and supplies according to established procedures. Develops independent performance at the intermediate and expert level in own service or cluster.

2.0          Participates in activities conducive to the safety of patients and team members.

                2.1          Monitors and supports use of aseptic technique. Correctly labels medications on the field, responsible with the RN for correct counts and care of the specimen.

                2.2          Assists in evaluating the quality and care of equipment, instruments and supplies. Actively participates in the Universal Protocol process.

              3.0          Utilizes interpersonal skill in relationships with other health team members.

4.0          Collaborates with Nurse Director and Clinical Service Coordinator to identify and meet learning needs.

     4.1          Seeks opportunities for continuing education and skill development.

    4.2                Adheres to Department of Nursing requirements for required training.
