Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, has partnered with the Department of Defense (DOD) to offer a FREE 16-week training opportunity at Danville Community College in Danville, VA. Classes start on November 1, 2021. This is an unpaid opportunity, however the training and lodging/housing in Danville, VA will be provided and paid for by a grant from the Department of Defense.  All housing and utilities for this training is covered by the program, and all participants will  be housed in downtown Danville’s River district. Participants will be responsible for all other living expenses including meals, etc.

Participants that successfully complete the 16-week/600 hour training program will be eligible to start work with the Inside (CNC) Machinist department at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA as a CDC Machinist earning nearly $20 per hour and will receive a $2500 sign-on bonus. All participants will be required to apply and successfully complete the Newport News Shipbuilding hiring process.

The 16-week/600 hour training program will cover safety, an introduction to varies tools and machinist skills, a validation of basic machinist competencies, and an evaluation of employability skills. This program is designed to be hands-on training, focusing on a candidate's ability to follow verbal and written instruction, programing and operation of lathe and milling machines, tool selection, accomplish specific tasks in a reasonable time, and perform all activities in a safe manner. Inside (CNC) Machinists operate various machines (manual and/or CNC) such as; lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, horizontal boring mills, etc. Inside machinists troubleshoot operations and take appropriate actions to correct. The machinists perform quality inspections, verifying dimensions of work piece are in accordance with drawing specifications.

Basic Qualifications

The candidate must be able to understand written instructions and strong math skills are essential. This is a construction environment involving extreme heights, confined spaces, physical labor and various weather conditions within a shipyard environment. Entry level candidates must pass Work keys testing requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior Mechanical experience such as Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair is a plus. Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in Machining, Diesel Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Mechanical.
