Lab Technician - Supervisor/Manager

Job Description

This position reports to Manager – Terminal Operations. In general, the role is responsible for overseeing and leading work of company staff and contractors; responsible for all operations and technical activities related to customer product quality functions; monitors laboratory operational activities to ensure compliance to all site safety and applicable industry standards, standards and processes; ensures effective communication and coordinating between plant operations and lab activities. This position will provide technical support, leadership and oversight for product quality determination at lab facilities. The overall guiding expectation is that the incumbent will actively engage with the team to ensure that all operations under his or her direction are striving to achieve excellent performance in the areas of safety, environmental and overall job quality.

General Duties and Responsibilities

Provide quantitative laboratory analysis information and services for customers of the facility by establishing sample preparation procedures; developing and implementing analytical procedures; evaluating laboratory information; consulting with leadership; reporting results to marketing and customers in a protocols mandated by the site.
Maintain facility laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards which meet or exceed ASTM and GPA requirements; implement repeatable calibration processes and procedures, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensure technician compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service and repair.
Maintain facility laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine level inventory; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
Manage the laboratory operations to ensure accurate, timely data for product quality.
Manage and plan laboratory expense and capital budgets to effectively meet productivity and quality.
Maintain laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making necessary adjustments to personnel schedules.
Maintains quality results by reviewing and developing where necessary, quality control and assurance programs; making adjustments in policies and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records.
Maintains the facility laboratory information system by identifying information needs and problems; recommending improvements; establishing priorities; testing; writing user manuals; training employees; maintaining security and confidentiality.
Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing; monitoring progress.
Maintains laboratory staff by involvement in recruitment; responsibility for training; following up on work results; providing feedback to management on performance and progress.
Ensure that groundwater systems and regulatory/compliance reporting is maintained.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending professional workshops, reviewing professional publications and establishing professional networks.
Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

Must demonstrate effective leadership, people skills and experience.
Proficient at managing budgets and multiple projects.
Demonstrate thorough knowledge of industry standards, analytical equipment and software systems.
Ability to make appropriate, evidence-based, professional judgement when faced with complex issues and requirements.
Understanding of regulatory language and ability to translate regulatory language into operational plans, processes, procedures, and reporting.
Demonstrate personal initiative and self-motivation.

Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel), Adobe Suite.

Must be committed to working safely at all times.
Maintain a valid driver’s license.

Experience/Education:

Bachelors degree in relevant Science or Engineering from an accredited college preferred. 
Laboratory experience is a must, experience in hydrocarbon analytical product quality preferred.

Travel:

Up to 5% travel may be required.
