Job Description

The USCG Aircraft Mechanic I troubleshoot malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems.

Principal Accountabilities

Perform a full range of airframe and engine maintenance, repairs, modifications, inspections and servicing of aircraft in accordance with approved methods, techniques and practices and certifies accomplished work.
Troubleshoot malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems while also conduct repairs, replacements, and rebuilds of aircraft structures and functional components including rigging, surface controls, plumbing and hydraulic units, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brake, rivet gun, and drills.
Troubleshoot engines and systems and use Federal Supply systems.
Read and interpret all aircraft instruments.
Replace or repair worn or damaged components, such as alternators, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, and engine mounted gearboxes, and compressor bleed valves using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment and remove engines and gearboxes from aircraft, using hoist or forklift truck.
Disassemble and inspect airframe and other components for wear, cracks, security, or other defects and repair or replace defective parts and then reassemble and install in aircraft.
Perform preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections, miscellaneous duties to service aircraft, including flushing crankcase, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes and jacking and towing of aircraft.
Enter data in the maintenance records description of the work performed and verifies the work was performed satisfactorily.
Service engines and airframe components at line station making repairs, short of overhaul, required to keep aircraft in safe operating condition.
Use special test equipment and tools.
Research the technical library and other applicable technical documentation (such as manufacturers' and DHS/DOD maintenance manuals, service bulletins, engineering and technical data) to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
Perform progressive, isochronal, phase, periodic, and other hourly or calendar inspections.
Examine engines for cracked cylinders and oil leaks.
Inspect jet engine turbine blades to detect cracks, distortion, corrosion, burn-out, security, or breaks, tests engine operation, using testing equipment.
Perform full system checkouts on all aircraft systems.
Perform complete servicing of aircraft.
Hands on knowledge/experience with oxygen systems installed in the aircraft, gaseous and liquid, and are capable of inspecting, repairing, servicing and or replacing oxygen system components.
Experience on C-130 aircraft is desirable.
Document maintenance as per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
Comply with work order timekeeping system procedures.
Maintain high state of cleanliness and utilize a clean-as-you-go process when executing maintenance duties. Perform weekly Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walk-downs.
Maintain situational awareness, stay cognitive-focused, and mitigate risks.
Comply with processes and procedures as per DHS/DOD documents and publications.
Immediately report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the supervisor. Maintain and control tools IAW USCG tool control policy and instructions. Inventory and inspect tools on a regular basis to identify when to replace worn or broken tools and report the need for replacement tools to the supervisor.
Clean work area as necessary, assuring all hazardous materials are properly stored; Handle hazardous materials, expired materials and wastes in accordance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
Comply with safety rules and procedures and perform work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work area. Promptly report accidents, injuries, safety, violations, and/or unsafe practices or procedures to supervisor.
Perform weekly break room and smoking area cleaning duties.
Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge & Skills

Possess knowledge of basic computer skills sufficient to use Government computer system to access various technical references for airframe repairs and Government training requirements.
Possess a valid United States driver's license.
Ability to read and interpret data is required.
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
Ability to obtain a Government flight line driver’s license.

Experience & Education

High School degree or equivalent required.
Four (4) years total documented experience performing aircraft maintenance on large multi-engine aircraft, two of which must be on large fixed-wing aircraft.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

Capable of performing tasks that frequently require lifting, reaching, bending, walking, pulling, sitting, standing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, and stretching for prolonged periods of time.
Must be capable of performing tasks in cramped, awkward, and strained positions and/or climbing up and down ladders, work platforms, scaffolding, and aircraft structures.
Must be capable of carrying items up to 40 pounds or, for heavier objects, must seek assistance of other workers or weightlifting devices.
Must be capable of wearing cumbersome personal protective equipment for HAZMAT operations.
May work in Aircraft maintenance hangar or outside.
Some domestic travel may be required.
