Job Description
The Assistant Superintendent - Transportation is a position of the Gary Railway Company of Transtar, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of U. S. Steel. The Assistant Superintendent is responsible to plan, schedule, actuate and control all phases of operations, and supervise all personnel in the performance of that work. This position works closely with Logistics, key managers and other outside customers, and interfaces with common carriers in the planning and scheduling of service requirements. The individual also performs any special duties assigned, by the Superintendent Transportation.
JOB RESPONSIBILITES:
• Provide and maintain a safe operation for all operating employees, correcting unsafe acts and conditions that create potential for incident or injury.
• Provide the necessary instruction and training and enforcement of all operating employees in Safe Operating Practices.
• Coordinate work activities to ensure compliance with company policies, labor agreements, and local, state, and federal regulations.
• Establish and maintain administrative and general supervision over all matters relating to an efficient operation. This includes regulation of manpower, motive power, and crew power, to reflect fluctuations in business conditions.
• Make periodic inspections of facilities and operations, make recommendations for the formulation of plans, policies, programs, and objectives, and assists in their implementation.
• Maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers.
• Evaluates performance and take the necessary action to correct all substandard performance through instruction, training, and if necessary, disciplinary action.
• Investigate train accidents and submit written reports to proper authority. Determine the cause and assess responsibility for these accidents. Assume charge of major derailments making arrangements for the clearing of wrecks and detouring traffic as is necessary to prevent service delays.
• Cooperate with other departments on such matters as track repairs, outages, and locomotive and car movements to ensure maximum efficiency of all departments and the overall railroad operation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
• Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Business Management, or Business Administration is preferred.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Road Foreman of Engines experience preferred.
• Minimum of 5-years of railroad transportation or industry management experience required.
• Computer proficiency required (MS Office Software).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills is required.
• Must be willing and available to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to accomplish job requirements.
• Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.
