Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an Executive Editor to join our Ecco imprint! This position will report to the VP, Editorial Director and will focus on nonfiction.

Ecco was founded as an independent press in 1971 by Daniel Halpern and has been part of HarperCollins since 1999.

We are an author-centric imprint with a progressive spirit, and our mission is to publish a select list of eclectic, diverse, and forward-thinking books. Eccos approach is unique: we combine the resources of a major publishing house with the heart and history of an independent press. At Ecco, we provide authors the space they need to write their best work, and then publish that work to its greatest potential.

Ecco is home to both legendary authors and new talents, and our titles include top literary and commercial fiction, science and nature, biography, politics, poetry, cookbooks, memoir, literature in translation, and rediscovered classics. Our authors have won numerous prizes and awards, including the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and many others. For over 50 years, Ecco books have forged lasting relationships with readers.

Responsibilities

* Acquires lead-level titles with critical and bestselling potential, and edits manuscripts for publication.
* Shepherds manuscripts through production process and oversees all aspects of the publication process, including working with design to create marketable packages and with the marketing group to develop marketing plans.

* Works directly with authors, agents, and all in-house departments.

* Oversees fact sheet, jacket, and catalog copy; reviews marketing material.

* Conducts and analyzes sales research, with a deep understanding of p&ls.

* Presents titles at various sales meetings.

* Negotiates contracts with agents.

* Shares supervision of an assistant.

Qualifications

* Minimum 8+ years of relevant editorial experience
* Acquisition and publication of multiple profitable and/or critically viable projects

* Excellent negotiation skills and strong presentation skills

* Established relationships with relevant agents and industry colleagues

* Extensive experience reviewing contracts

* Strong understanding and awareness of general marketplace and relevant market segments within industry

* Ability to effectively communicate with all levels across the organization

* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

* Ability to work independently and set priorities under pressure

* Excellent written and oral communication skills

* Proficient knowledge of MS Office
