The Cancer Center Infusion Pharmacy Manger is responsible for overseeing the operations of the infusion pharmacy clean rooms, Urology and Cox Pharmacy compounding areas, and leading the team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and supervisors that work in these areas. This individual assumes primary responsibility and accountability for the provision of safe, effective and timely medication preparation and delivery in a consistent and reliable manner. This manager is responsible for day to day operations, personnel management and quality oversight of the infusion compounding areas and is accountable for appropriate financial and human resource utilization in these areas. The Cancer Center Infusion Pharmacy Manger will actively monitor and, when appropriate, implement improvements in operational efficiency, quality control and financial performance. In short, this manager sets the standard for excellence for the department's sterile hazardous compounding services and designs pharmacy operations to collaboratively, safely and effectively support patient-centered care and clinical pharmacy programs.
The Cancer Center Infusion Pharmacy Manger reports to the Director of Oncology Pharmacy Services and works closely with other operations and clinical managers to advance pharmacy practice and patient care services throughout the institution, with a focus on the MGH Cancer Center. This manager will also work closely with the Clinical Manger of Oncology Pharmacy in matters pertaining to clinical practice and the Compounding Quality and Compliance Coordinator to ensure personnel are properly trained and performing at a high level, the compounding environments are appropriately cleaned and monitored, and all compounded products are of the highest quality. This manager will directly oversee a pharmacy technician supervisor and also work with the Chief Pharmacy Officer and the pharmacy leadership team in the development of goals for the department and work with other managers and colleagues throughout MGH to facilitate the accomplishment of these goals.
Principle duties and Responsibilities
Serves as a subject matter expert in compounding practices and is intimately familiar with recommendations of USP <795>, <797>, and <800>
Assures compliance with the Massachusetts State Board of Pharmacy compounding regulations and requirements of other legal bodies and regulatory agencies
Directs the activities of staff who work within assigned areas, oversees staffing models and pharmacist and technician daily coverage of operational areas, provides supervision of staff, and ensures the accuracy of employee timecards and leave records
Implement new technologies and automation in the infusion pharmacy space to support safe and effective patient care
Contribute to design and construction projects for new cleanrooms and provide input on strategic initiatives for the Cancer Center's move to a new tower
Develop and maintain professional interdisciplinary relationships with key stakeholders within the Cancer Center
Oversees pharmacy staff development, new employee orientation, and ongoing training of pharmacy staff
Assists in the recruitment and retention of competent Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Interns and Technician Supervisors
Performs personnel performance evaluations and implements performance improvement and corrective action plans when necessary
Facilitates and supports staff, resident and student training experiences and competency assessments
Develops and enforces policies and procedures and ensures they are updated, understood and followed by staff in coordination with other members of the management team
Coordinates with members of the supply chain and finance teams on matters related to drug and supply use, inventory management and billing integrity
Maintains an emphasis on ongoing quality, safety and productivity initiatives
Actively manages human, capital, and operational resources to collaboratively support patient care services, medication safety systems, regulatory compliance initiatives, and quality assurance programs throughout the Department of Pharmacy
Maintains effective communication with their staff, other members of the administrative and leadership teams, colleagues throughout the MGH Department of Pharmacy, MGH Cancer Center, MGH Medical Infusion Center, and other institutional departments
Consistently demonstrates professional attitude, skillfully negotiates conflict to promote collaboration
Acts as a positive role model for other staff members
Mentors other staff, elevating the standard of practice
Assumes other responsibilities in the management of the department as delegated by the Director of Oncology Pharmacy Services and Chief Pharmacy Officer
Graduate of ACPE accredited college of pharmacy
MS Pharmacy Administration, MBA, MHA or other advanced degree preferred
Completion of ASHP accredited PGY1 and PGY2 residency or extensive experience (5-7 years) of institutional pharmacy experience
Pharmacy leadership experience preferred
Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Skills / Abilities / Competencies required
Knowledge of Federal and State laws and regulations
Knowledge of USP <797>, <800> recommendations
Experience using compounding automation systems (IV Robots, IV workflow systems)
Entry-level training on pharmacy informatics systems
Experience using integrated EHR system (Epic, Cerner, etc.)

Knowledge of contemporary hospital pharmacy systems

Oversight of infusion pharmacy IV rooms (hazardous and non-hazardous) and Urology an d Cox Pharmacy compounding areas totaling approximately 20-30 FTE of professional and technical staff, including a technician supervisor
Fiscal Responsibility
Actively manages human, capital, and operational resources for inpatient compounding areas and assists with annual budget process
