At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to make great consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences that will transform how we work, play, and communicate. Come work alongside world class scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes AR and VR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. As an Optical Engineering Lead working on AR/VR, you will be responsible for the design, development and productization of innovative displays and precision optical components that are core to delivering transformative experiences for next generation Facebooks AR products. You will join a team that is working on radically new concepts and approaches required because of new constraints imposed by advanced AR/VR devices. You will develop optical device prototypes and products and establish new process capabilities with supply-chain partners and releasing product sub-systems that are fully hardened for high-volume manufacturing. We are looking for an individual that thrives in thinking outside the box, is able to drive and lead developing and pushing the state-of-the-art of technology and also works well in teams comprising a wide range of disciplines. Based on a strong optical engineering background, solid R&D methodology and a data driven approach, ideal candidates should demonstrate experience through a successful track record of bringing products and technologies from concept into mass production.
Optical Engineering Lead Responsibilities
* Investigate the state-of-the-art for solid state, liquid, mechanical, and novel tunable optical device technologies.
* Lead the definition of a technology development roadmap for Facebooks VR technology product line.
* Perform detailed technology analysis and prepare data driven presentations for cross functional reviews.
* Lead the development, optimization, productization and test the functionality and reliability of these novel technologies.
* Work closely with internal cross-functional teams, program managers and leadership as well as lead external vendors to enable the development and use of new materials, processes, methods and surface finishes for world-class industrial designs.
* Define and execute testing and evaluation of different technologies to determine practical performance limits and drive technology selection.
* Support scaleup and high volume production of components.
* Remove material and integration barriers from the path to commercialization.
