WymanGordon is a worldwide supplier to the aerospace and industrial gas turbine markets. We hold quality accreditations for all of the major airframe and engine manufacturers for both civil and military applications. WymanGordon creates rotating closeddie forgings which are critical for aerospace and landbased gas turbines. WymanGordon also manufactures structural forgings for airframe, nuclear, petrochemical, power generation, and space applications. In addition, WymanGordon has heat treating, testing, and other operations that support its global forging business.

Location Profile

Located in South Gate, California, Shultz Steel operates the most modern vertically integrated forging facility in the aerospace industry. Shultz Steel offers a wide range of impression forgings, including some of the largest and most complex available and they have an unsurpassed line of open die forgings. Shultz Steel is capable of producing seamless rolled rings up to 26 feet in diameter. The operation uses all major alloys including titanium, vacuum melt high strength and stainless steels, nickel and cobalt; and aluminum (rings only).

Position Summary

Completes analysis and correlation of technical data from the forging process area, development of process plans for statistical monitoring of processes, and the design and completion of experiments to improve forging processes using traditional and exotic metals.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Assists in manufacturing development projects and process control projects to isolate and eliminate process variables.

Performs Fixed Process Audits to ensure conformance to established processes and procedures.

Witnesses and collects all pertinent process information on all First Article tryouts.

Performs various metallurgical projects, including initiating APICS plans, which ensures implementation in the shop and drawing results and conclusions from SPC charts. Creates SPC charts and assists Process Controllers with charting, detecting and assigning cause(s) and taking corrective action for out of control events.

Reviews sales quotations, planning travelers, customer specifications and drawings, testing and outside vendor purchase orders, purchase orders and final shipping documents for metallurgical and technical correctness.

Performs other studies, as assigned, including Gage R&R and Capability, as well as Design of Experiment (DOE).

Assists shift Manufacturing Manager in his duties, with particular emphasis on process variables and process efficiency (Kaizen).

Performs Kaizen studies to better understand the process and improve its efficiency.

Issues reports on all process control and process efficiency studies that are performed.

Works with Process Control (SPC) Manager on all forge shop projects.

Works with Heat Treat supervisors to help guide the functions of the department on the second or third shifts. Reviews light ups for accuracy.

Experience & Education

Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in Metallurgical Engineering, or equivalent, from fouryear college or university. Three years experience as a Process or Product Metallurgist in the forging industry, or three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skills

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
