Job Description

As an Adhesion and Fracture Expert, you will advance adhesion, fracture, and interfacial science efforts for PPG's elite Coatings Insight Team; while working collaboratively with other scientists to advance our understanding of the relationships between coating formulation, material properties, and performance across a broad range of high impact projects. Key responsibilities:

* Define new coating design principles through adhesion and fracture science, and work collaboratively with different businesses to transfer these findings and accelerate product advancement
* Based on business needs, propose new testing methodologies and implement new testing approaches to advance PPG capabilities and expertise
* Actively monitor the competitive patent landscape and follow publication activity to stay up-to-date with external technologies
* Network effectively within PPG, collaborating with other PPG scientists and engineers across R&D, manufacturing, and elsewhere in the business
* Develop and lead valuable industry-academia collaborations, attend seminars, and represent PPG at external scientific conferences
* Regularly communicate progress on projects and new initiatives to the broader PPG research community
* Functionally supervise chemists and technicians to advance projects
* Maintain a safe and clean lab environment

Qualifications

* A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, polymer science, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field, with a focus in adhesion and fracture mechanics
* 10 years experience preferred in industry or supporting industry
* Consistent record of accomplishments in adhesion and fracture science: publications, patents, and presentations at conferences
* Excellent oral communication, technical writing, and presentation skills
* A deep understanding of adhesion and fracture mechanics, as it pertains to adhesive and coating systems. This includes specific knowledge of mechanical and thermal analysis of polymeric materials, the structure-property relationships of polymeric materials, and the impact of interfacial properties on adhesion.
