Introduction
The QMS (Quality Management System) Database Engineer is an advanced level position within the SMS Central Support Organization responsible for contributing, both individually and as a team, to the on-going maintenance and enhancements to QMS owned relational databases, utilizing project and change-management methodologies and architectural standards. The QMS Database Engineer will lead database maintenance and improvement efforts by acting as liaison between business groups and IT to maintain our Quality Management System standards and policies.
Key Results:
* Under general supervision, oversee and perform on-going maintenance and enhancements to relational databases owned by the Quality Management System (QMS) central organization utilizing project and change-management methodologies and architectural standards.
* Ensure databases owned by QMS central organization are capable of performing the functions needed to maintain the Quality Management System standards and policies.
* Ensure databases owned by QMS central organization are capable of performing the functions needed to maintain standards and policies of other internal organizations leveraging these databases.
* Complete and maintain overall database documentation including database design, functionality, architecture, and day-to-day database changes.
* Formulate and define system scope and objectives for assigned projects, by working with end-users to understand business requirements.
* Perform on-going maintenance and enhancement to the existing database, as well as new project implementations.
* Identifies database requirements by interviewing customers; analyzing department applications, programming, and operations; evaluating existing systems and designing proposed systems.
* Recommends solutions by defining database physical structure and functional capabilities, database security, data back-up, and recovery specifications.
* Prepares users by conducting training; providing information; resolving problems.
* Provides information by answering questions and requests.
* Supports database functions by designing and coding utilities.
* Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing NiSource and QMS standards.
* Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
* Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Principle Duties/Essential Responsibilities:
* Lead database maintenance and improvement efforts by acting as liaison between business groups and IT as needed to maintain our Quality Management System standards and policies.
* Prepare cost estimates and project timelines for completing recommended solutions.
* Communicate database and project status, identifying potential opportunities or issues.
* Evaluate all database changes and updates that are supplied by vendors, before installation.
* Participate and support change-management process as required.
* Develop and maintain database documentation and source code management.
* Provide post-implementation support for newly implemented systems.
* Develop solid understanding of business area and/or functions for which new data integrations are developed.
* Evaluate and recommend database growth opportunities; arrange and facilitate vendor demonstrations.
* Evaluate vendor responses to RFP, RFQ, RFI and support vendor selection process
* Support as needed internal QMS and business group BI and data visualization needs.
Qualifications:
* Relational Database Performance Tuning, Database Security and Administration
* Demonstrated abilities in the area of database development and support including incident and risk management.
* Detailed understanding of database maintenance, development, change management, and process improvement methodologies.
* Must be knowledgeable in the development and maintenance of ETL, API, and FTP processes.
* Demonstrated proficiency in SQL specifically around the ability to create tables and views and troubleshoot issues.
* Proficiency in Tableau or similar business intelligence tools.
* 7 years or more of experience in strategy, quality/continuous improvement, operations, finance, or related functional area
* Experience with transformation, change management and/or project management
* Proven ability to facilitate multiple projects/tasks while meeting deadlines with quality
* Excellent at critical thinking and analysis (forward thinking)
* Demonstrated ability to identify, communicate and solve complex problems.
* Experience with business case and key performance indicator development
* Ability to conduct workshops, influence decisions and facilitate discussions with leadership

Education:
* Prefer BS degree in information/computer science or equivalent and two or more years of IT experience in database administration, business intelligence and project management.
Preferred:
* Six Sigma certification or experience in process mapping and controls

* Knowledge of utility operations (i.e. gas, electric, construction, engineering)
* Knowledge of the Quality Management System (i.e., ISO 9000/9001, Malcolm Baldridge)
