Director, Oncology Discovery

Job Description

This Director level position will join the Oncology Discovery team at Bristol-Myers Squibb at the Oncogenesis Thematic Research Center in San Diego, CA. This person will oversee a team dedicated to identifying and advancing the discovery of new cancer targets and medicines, leveraging our world leading expertise in targeted protein degradation. This position will report into the head of Oncology Discovery, be a member of the leadership team, and will oversee a team of 25+ biologists dedicated to our genetic screening platform (drug MoA/novel target ID), target validation and discovery biology project support (to IND).

The qualified candidate is a motivated and creative scientist who possesses substantial expertise and passion for cancer biology and genetics, and a keen interest in progressing targets supported by robust patient selection hypotheses.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting scientific results to multidisciplinary teams, senior management and at external scientific meetings. The candidate will develop external partnerships/collaborations to advance internal programs, as appropriate. S/he will be responsible for supervising a research team of 25+ persons. This position is in San Diego, CA.

Preferred Qualifications
* A Ph.D. degree with 10+ years of relevant academic or industry research experience in cancer biology and genetics, and/or oncology target ID, validation and drug discovery

* Deep understanding of molecular drivers of cancer

* Experience with preclinical models of cancer (in vitro/in vivo)

* Familiarity with CRISPR based screens to interrogate targets and biological pathways

* A proven track record in the field of cancer biology/genetics, as evidenced by publication record and/or successful advancement of molecules to clinical development

* Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate colleague in other functional areas; including with informatics and translational research scientists to generate testable hypotheses to validate novel targets, identify and develop patient selection hypotheses

* An effective manager and mentor to more junior PhDs and associates. Experience leading a large team.

* Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to effectively present scientific data and concepts to international standards.

* Familiarity with targeted protein degradation, intrinsic degraders or molecular glue approaches desired

* Experience or the ability to innovate in novel preclinical in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo oncology model development and functional screens that enables bridging from tumor biology to host immunity
